Apache - Marcus Povey

So, I've been using ownCloud for a while now , as an efficient way to share certain files across my devices. I've even learnt on How to Make a Minecraft Server which has been a lot of fun. It's a PHP application, so it's simple to set up.

To run the latest Known code, I upgraded my server to PHP 7.3. PHP 7.3 is the latest stable code, and so is the version everyone should be running in fact.

This presented a bit of trouble, since ownCloud could only be used on PHP versions up to and including 7.2! The next version of ownCloud will likely to support PHP 7.3 but the release schedules aren't as fast and I needed to get my syncing setup and running again.

It is possible to make use of PHP 7.2 on the ownCloud server and PHP 7.3 on all other applications.

Installing PHP-FPM

If you are using the older mod_php apache module, then you will have to install PHP-FPM.

I was going to do this in the past because this is the most modern method of running PHP. It's faster, offers many more options for performance, and crucially for my purposes, is able to decouple Apache from PHP which gives you the option of running different versions.

This is possible on servers running Debian (mine is Debian with a third-party PHP.7.3 apt repository). It's incredibly simple:

You'll also want to install all the PHP modules you'll need (pdo and gd, for example) however I'll leave that an exercise for the reader.

The next step is to modify your configuration:

There are two points you should keep in mind. First replace the a2dismod file with the current version of PHP. Additionally, you'll notice that I didn't turn on the PHP 7.2 FPM config. This is because PHP 7.3 should be the default, however PHP 7.2 can be enabled on select virtual hosts.

The phpinfo search() should now show you something similar to this:

Note the PHP version and the Server API.

If you examine your server processes, you'll also notice both PHP 7.3 and PHP 7.2 FPM servers running:

Configuring ownCloud's VirtualHost for PHP 7.2

You'll need to modify your ownCloud VirtualHost to enable the PHP CGI server at a speed of 7.2.

Again, this is really really easy, and is pretty much a cut and paste from the php7.2-fpm.conf file you'll find in your /etc/apache2/conf-available directory.

The following should be included in your ownCloud's definition of virtual host

Now, run the phpinfo() on your ownCloud domain and you will see PHP 7.2 running!

Now I can get back to syncing my files, while running the latest PHP version for other domains.

This is a helpful feature that can be used to accomplish more than slow software updates. For a start this method will let me run a cutting-edge version of PHP such as PHP 7.4 against, for example, my development version of Known and keep my blog running the stable version.

Anyway, I thought this was pretty cool. I hope you find it useful too!
