The planets have aligned and I've been back to Minecraft. Every once and a while I get the urge to contact a few friends and create a server and then spend a few hours a week creating crazy things and fighting to survive in a crowded world. Usually hosting the server on my laptop, but this time I wanted to try something different (read more complicated). I am a software developer and have the power of cloud computing at my disposal , so why not start up Linode instances and host the server there?
My Linode instance was already set up to host the server, so I tried to use it for the first night. A tiny 1 core 1GB memory machine can run a decent static website, but it's a disaster in running a gaming server. This is the best method to ensure that your server never crashes and runs out of memory.
Linode's 4 core and 4GB memory instances are recommended for those who intend to play the game. If you do not plan on having hundreds of players playing on the server simultaneously it will be more than enough. The most appealing thing is that these instances cost $0.06/hr. I've written a small shell script to do the installation on its own and also sign the EULA. So now whenever I would like to play with friends, I just need to hit a total of three buttons in the Linode administrator panel, connect via SSH to the server, execute my script, and play. When we're done, I can transfer the entire world onto my Mac via FTP and shut down the instance. Simple, inexpensive and quick.
