Overview

Vanilla Minecraft can be fun, but it may get a bit stale after a while. Being in a position to add new features to the game without waiting for Mojang to implement them can be the key to alleviating any boredom that you might experience in your server. Plugins are an excellent way to do this.

Plugins are server-side parts of software that add features to a server without having to make any client side changes as you may need to with mods. There are a myriad of plugins available on the internet, so it is almost impossible to find what you want.

In order to install plugins, your server has to be running either Spigot or Paper as the server version. Both will accept plugins from Spigot and Bukkit websites. You can find our guide on how to change the server version.

How to Install Plugins using the Plugin List

Apex Hosting offers a wide range of plugins from Spigot and Bukkit that can be integrated directly into your panel. This is the easiest way to install plugins on Java servers.

1. Log in to your Apex Hosting Panel and select the server that you want to install the plugins to.

2. Select Plugin List on the left-hand side of the panel.

3. You can select to make use of Spigot or Bukkit as your source. The only thing that might differ is the results you get. Both plugins should function on the server.

4. You can search for specific names of plugins or by category. If you find a plugin you wish to install, click it.

5. Now at the top of the page, make sure that there is a compatible version of your server's version. e.g. If your server is running Paper 1.16.5 you will want to ensure that there is one that is compatible with 1.16.

6. Once you verify there is an appropriate version, you can select it from the Version dropdown menu. Next, click on the Install button to the right. You can confirm that the installation has completed by looking at your server console.

7. Once the process is finished, make sure you restart your server for the plugin to load.

How to Install Plugins using FTP

Sometimes the plugin list may not contain what you are seeking. Downwithdestruction You may have to look online for a direct plugin Jar download. There are a variety of popular sites to download plugins, like the SpigotMC website and the Dev Bukkit website, and sometimes , from the developers' github pages. The most effective method to search for the plugin online is to just search for the name or keywords.

1. Download the plugin Jar file from its source online.

2. Log into your panel by clicking the FTP File Access tab.

3. Once you've logged in, locate and click on the folder for plugins.

4. Once you're in the plugins folder, click upload to your left and drag your jar file.

5. Once the file has been fully uploaded, you can return to your main panel page.

6. Restart the server in order to let the plugin to load.

Common Problems

Plugins not loading:

Sometimes, even after restarting the server, the plugins might not be loaded. Run /plugins in the game to see whether a plugin is loaded. If it is green then it should be loaded. It may not be in the list, or it may not be red. Check that the plugin is compatible with the server version you are using and also check its page for plugins to ensure it does not have any required dependency plugins. Sometimes, if you restart the server and then look at the console output, it will inform you what error it is giving you or what plugin it requires to function.

Plugin List Failure:

If you try to download a plugin through the Plugin List in your panel and it gives you errors such as "Error downloading plugin" This could indicate that there's a problem with the source site of the plugin. If this happens it is recommended that you install the plugin on your server following the FTP section of this guide.

No Plugins Folder

If you attempt to manually install plugins on your server but you are unable to find the plugins folder, it is possible that your server does not allow plugins. Or you may have forgotten about restarting after changing versions to Spigot/Paper. Verify that your server is compatible by looking up the version you have selected in the Jar File dropdown on your panel. Certain compatible versions would be: Spigot, Paper, Magma, Thermos and Cauldron.
