Meet Dream The Mysterious Minecraft YouTuber who's one of the Fastest-growing Creators on the Platform

YouTuber Dream has broken numerous records and received millions of views. But the man behind the avatar remains an unsolved mystery. Dream has 16.4 million users on YouTube is among the fastest growing YouTube channels. Although he's faced controversy, the Minecraft expert has one of the most loyal and committed fanbases online. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Minecraft YouTuber Dream has quickly risen up the ranks of creators and has become one of the fastest-growing YouTube channel's of 2020, and the second overall creator of the year, according to the platform. The faceless green avatar who is adept at finding "Minecraft's" cavern-filled secrets has managed to acquire over 16 million subscribers in under two years. But what exactly makes Dream so distinctive and popular when there have been thousands of content creators who have created worlds with Minecraft's characteristic blocks?

Who is Dream?

Dream's identity and personal life aren't known to the public. The YouTuber who prefers to keep his face private, decided not to reveal his identity. His avatar on YouTube is a simple neon-green model. The design is famous, and easily recognizable to the average "Minecraft" user.

Mysticat, a YouTuber, claims that Dream's branding is "unprofessional however that doesn't mean it's not good." Safeminecraftmods Dream utilizes a Microsoft Paint drawn character that's hilarious and appealing to children, which is Minecraft's core audience."

Dream created his YouTube channel in 2014 but it's unclear if he uploaded regularly until July 2019. In his first video, he purposefully "triggers" viewers by playing the game as poorly as he can. He does things like placing blocks on the top of chests, killing sheep for their wool, and eating rotten flesh.

After his first upload, Dream started posting content fairly often. Felix Kjellberg, known online as the wildly popular PewDiePie, had been playing "Minecraft" for his huge audience of over 100 million users at this point. Dream was able to find the way to modify Kjellberg's "world seed," meaning, the randomly generated world his "Minecraft" game had created, using tricks he learned from forums. The video received 200,000 views within two days. He then made three videos that would garner over two million views each. At the end of July, Dream had gained 54,000 subscribers , and his fame was born.

Dream's channel will continue to increase the number of millions and thousands subscribers over the next few months. However, his second breakthrough moment was in November 2019. Dream made a lot of videos that capitalized upon the popular format "___ but it changes every time." His video , titled "Minecraft but Item Drops Are Random And Multiplied" ..." went viral with 32 million views and bringing his 600,000 new followers.

Dream would upload frequently throughout the rest of the year, steadily gaining hundreds and thousands of subscribers each month, and millions of views. His "Minecraft Speedrunner vs." series, where Dream would choose to complete the game while certain NPCs (also known as non-player characters) pursued him, or had objectives that needed to be accomplished was a huge hit. Dream would also begin working with GeorgeNotFound, who was a friend and a future member of Dream's roleplaying server that he developed in the month of May of 2020.

Dream has been accused of cheating in Minecraft

Dream's channel was approaching its subscriber-growth apex, gaining 2.6 million subscribers by August 2020 and becoming the mainstay of the game. He had uploaded a speedrun of the 1.14 version of Minecraft in March of 2020, and 1.15 in June, so when the 1.16 version was released later in the year, he needed to adopt it. He finished his run in fifth place and was pleased with where he was placed on the leaderboard.

Geosquare Moderator of the official speedrun forums, uploaded a YouTube video entitled "Did Dream Fake his Speedruns Official Moderator Analysis" on December 11, 2020. Geosquare and his co-workers Minecraft moderators had examined the livestreams and concluded that Dream had recorded events that were too likely to have occurred without the help of mods or cheats. The moderators looked over the 29-page document and concluded that Dream was 1 in 1.75 trillion likely to have discovered the necessary items needed to complete the game.

Dream has denied any fraud or wrongdoing in a variety of Twitter threads and videos. Dream posted his video on the 23rd of December in which he discussed the claims. He shared a study that he had done using Photoexcitation. It concluded that there was a 1 in 100 million chance of his winning.

The speedrunning mods then released a new five-page document discrediting Dream's studies. Dream responded in a final tweet writing that "this drama has been a stressful time for the majority of the Minecraft community and a large portion of that is probably due to my original response to the drama. I take full responsibility for this."

Dream was the victim of harassment, including doxxing

On January 1 2021, Dream fans found his home using a picture of his kitchen posted on his second account and shared the information, an invasion of privacy known as doxxing.

Dream spoke out about the incident in a Twitlonger on January 7th, as did his ex-girlfriend, whom he believes is spreading false reports. He denied her accusations and stated that he does not have any issues with YouTube. Dream also stated that his friends who appear in his videos don't receive a cut of his revenue.

How Dream can master the YouTube algorithm?

His knowledge of YouTube's algorithm is the main reason for Dream's massive growth in 2019 and 2020.

He places his keywords in the right places, capitalizes on trends, and creates thumbnails that fans would like to click. Similar to the wizardry that Jimmy Donaldson, known as the extremely popular Mr. Dream has mastered, Beast has also learned to be successful on YouTube similar to Beast.
