Snapshots may contain any feature that the studio would like to test, and could include new biomes, mobs as well as game mechanics, blocks, and even new mobs. So far, Snapshots have a bunch of features from the Caves and Cliffs update, including glow squids (opens in new tab) cave generation (opens in a new tab) as well as the lush wildlife and flora (opens in a new tab) that you'll encounter in the blocky caverns. If you're willing to accept some minor glitches here and there, Minecraft Snapshots are a great way to test out new features prior to the official release. Here's everything you need to know to get a sneak peek of the future of Minecraft.
Minecraft Snapshot installation How do you access beta builds
Snapshots are available on the Java edition of Minecraft, but there is a way to see the first features of the Bedrock edition also. These are the Bedrock betas for Android, Xbox One and Windows 10, which are not the same as Snapshots however they include many new features.
Mojang has made the process of jumping into early versions of Minecraft fairly easy, so here's how to do it:
Snapshots on Minecraft: Java Edition:
- Start the Minecraft launcher - Select the 'Installations' tab
- Check the box titled Snapshots in the top right corner.
The most recent Snapshot will appear at the bottom of the installation list
Beta version of Minecraft: Bedrock Edition:
- Visit the Microsoft Store app on Windows 10
- Look for the Xbox Insider app and download it.
Start the app, and then choose the Insider Content tab on the left
- Select Minecraft and click the join button
The app could take you to Minecraft's product page if you don't have a digital copy the game
If you're after Xbox One or Android instructions for Minecraft, visit Mojang's beta site (opens in a new tab) for more information. To stay up to date with the latest Snapshots and betas, bookmark the Minecraft forum's news page (opens in new tab) that provides a list of all versions released.
Snapshots and betas can be quite unstable and the world you enter could appear a bit sloppy or even crash. It is best not to enter a world that you don't mind being damaged. Also, it is best to keep your best Minecraft builds (opens in new tab) secure in a different universe.
