Former Olympic athlete, she doesn't go to the pool no more. She trained for many years in fitness centers with pools that smelt strong of chlorine. Prior to now, this would make swimming a good bet however Garceau realizes that this isn't real.
Her teammates and she were awarded the bronze medal in 2000, with the Canadian team of synchronized swimmers at Sydney, Australia, but for her, it was a cost other than the effort and time dedicated to training. The complaints she had were about digestive issues, a bloated system, frequent migraines and then, her diagnosis was that of chronic bronchitis.
For many around the world swimming is a good sport to enjoy. If you're not in the open ocean, or in an aquatic area, the next ideal option is a swimming in a pool.
Do you think that's the case?
Swimming pools offer a captivating appearance with their soothing blue sky: calm and tranquil, which even those who aren't able to swim are unable to resist.
The inability to swim does not need to make you unfit to swim in a pool. You can lounge at the edge, swim or lie in the shallow part and watch the other fun-lovers around you.
The season for outdoor swimming is coming to the end of many regions of the western hemisphere , and the swimmers are heading indoors to complete their training. However, how secure are the water they're diving into?
Researchers warn that swimming pools pose a significant health risk. They are studying the long-term consequences of the chemicals found in the water of pools.
The majority of people who have been in pools often claim that they have urinated in the pool and, as the evidence suggests, this occurs more often than it does not. (Michael Phelps was one of the American Olympic medal swimming champion admitted to having poop in the pool a lot).
Bruce Y. Lee, writing for Forbes Bruce Y. Lee, writing for Forbes, states that people do not have to pee in the pool to pollute the water since poop is absorbed into the water through the bums of people. A study found that bottoms contain an average of 0.14 grams of urine.
Yuck!
Recently, an Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study found that 80% of swimming pools in public had safety and health violations, that led to the closure of some recreation facilities.

After her retirement in 2002, Garceau began to research holistic medical practices. The experts suggested that she detoxify her body to rid it of harmful chemicals such as chlorine.
"As an element of my quest to discover the causes that caused my health issues I researched the potential effects of chlorine and came across some shocking information," she writes in the appendix to the publication "Heart of Bronze."
"Chlorine eliminates the majority of germs that cause disease in a reaction that lasts a second reason, which is the main reason why it's present in drinking water and the majority of swimming pools across the U.S. Sates," said Dr. Tom Lachocki, the chief executive officer of the National Swimming Pool Foundation.
Without chlorine, the chance of contracting water-borne illnesses increases. However, the security of chlorinated pools with the chemical compounds created by the use of this chemical has certain scientists concerned.
In reality, the problem lies in those disinfectants (chemicals) in the water of the pool that, when combined with urine and sweat can cause health problems.
Scientists say that when ammonia from urine reacts with the chlorine present in pools they create the chemical chloramines that is believed to cause birth defects and respiratory diseases in humans. A study published on livescience.com declares that public swimming pools pose more danger than most people think.

Researchers have linked the use of chlorine in pools as a source of damage to the genetics of cells which has been linked to various health problems, including bladder cancer and asthma.
Furthermore, experts estimate that 35 percent of people who use pools do not bathe prior to going to the pool. This is why the majority of public pools have recreational water bacteria that are introduced accidentally by swimmers suffering from respiratory illnesses, diarrhea, as well as ear and skin infections.
Additionally, Michael Plewa, a professor of genetics at the University of Illinois, notes that the chemicals commonly used in public pools is brominating chemicals (there are many these chemicals) and are not eco-friendly disinfectants.
He says that when carbon-friendly materials like sweat, urine, feces hair, skin sunscreen, cosmetics and other substances mix with brominating agents, it creates a toxic mix. These harmful mixtures can cause respiratory illnesses, gene mutations and birth defects and accelerate the rate of aging.
