What do you Think of a Virtual Wedding?

Content of the article Since the beginning the idea of living in a virtual world has been popular. For instance, in Minecraft for instance - players can build houses or entire villages.

Article content But what about having a a virtual wedding?

A couple was married in the metaverse, while other are expressing displeasure about the design.

Sure, many people utilized Zoom to attend weddings during COVID-19. But what about actually having all of the wedding celebrations in the metaverse - a swarming virtual world - with each guest being an avatar? It turns out that it is already possible.

Article content And the response on the internet has been mixed, with some people elated by the concept, and others debating it or pointing out that similar things have been happening for years on other platforms, but with more impressive graphics.

It's really hard to think of anything more awful, anything I'd rather do than watching cartoons of people in conference calls. Call it what you want.

The New York Times reported that Traci and Dave Gagnon got married in the metaverse during the labor day weekend. The couple held their in-person wedding at a golf course in New Hampshire, but also had a wedding in the virtual world as well to accommodate family and friends who weren't able to attend. Instead of a video conference, the couple opted to let the entire event unfold in a virtual world and include images from the live wedding broadcast mirrored in the virtual space.

The backlash to the story was quick and swift, with Jezebel writing in a headline: "The Metaverse might be the worst thing to ever happen to weddings." The gossip site also pointed out that this trend could make it difficult to respectfully decline an invitation to a wedding.

Article content on Twitter there were many users who disagreed that this was something new.

"This was 20 years ago, why is it so unique now?" one user wrote.

Others claimed that graphics in games like Second Life and World of Warcraft were more appealing fifteen years ago.

"Really it's hard to think of anything better than anything I'd like to do other than stare at cartoons of people in the conference call," another Twitter user wrote. "Call it whatever you want."

The idea was loved by many. "A novel way to celebrate weddings! What could you have imagined such a wedding before? One wrote that the possibilities are endless. Another person pondered an ethereal wedding in front of the Eiffel Tower.

Article content The Gagnons stated that their wedding could be held in the metaverse so people could attend even if they were unable to physically. Traci's maid of honor, who was sick, was still in a position to walk down the aisle and Dave's friend, who was unable to attend because his wife has medical conditions that predate her, could deliver the toast.

The metaverse that hosted the wedding was made by Virbela, a company that, according to its website, "builds immersive 3D worlds for learning, work and virtual events." With the Virbela platform there is no VR headset is needed and it works with nearly every computer.

The result was not embraced by Gamers.

"Graphically, the Metaverse looks about as good as the PlayStation 1 game," is the claim of an article on dexerto.com which is a gaming news site.

Article content Many Twitter users shared photos of weddings that were held years ago in the multiplayer online game Final Fantasy XIV. One user wrote "Look at how beautiful it appears."

For the Gagnons to have their wedding in the metaverse made sense, since their avatars were able to meet before they had met in person. According to The New York Times interview the couple met at an Las Vegas company event when they were both employed by eXp Realty. This company is expanding into virtual work and into the metaverse.

Man I love this pic.twitter is more attractive than the one I took to a wedding at FF14 just a few weeks ago.
