No NFTs In Minecraft, Mojang Says

The update starts with a brief overview of what NFTs are, with a note about their extreme volatility, before laying out the current rules for Minecraft servers. The main goal of these policies, Mojang said, is "to ensure that Minecraft remains a community in which everyone can access the same content." NFTs however, are designed to "create models for exclusion and scarcity," which is clearly in contradiction to this principle. They're out.

"To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy an enjoyable and safe experience, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be used inside our client and server applications, nor can Minecraft game-specific content, such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods, be used by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset," Mojang wrote.

Mojang has stated that the update was initiated by a number of Minecraft-related NFTs (and play-to-earn) servers. This exploits the gap in the policy of the company to divide the community into "the haves" and "the have-nots".

Also a matter of concern is that some NFTs "may not be trustworthy and may end up costing the players who purchase them," which is a remarkably polite way of putting it: The non-official Minecraft NFT game Blockverse (opens in new tab) that vanished with more than $1.2 million in January, is just one of the many examples of NFT-related misfeasance (opens in new tab) and criminality (opens in a new tab) we've witnessed over the last few years. This is particularly relevant to Minecraft because its players tend to skew younger than many other games, which makes it likely more susceptible to scams.

The official Minecraft guidelines for use (opens new tab) have been revised to address this issue in greater specific terms. However, the main rule is this: "NFTs associated any in-game contents, such as skins for worlds, persona objects or other mods" are strictly prohibited.

Mojang stated that it will continue to monitor blockchain technology's development to determine if it can "enable safer gaming experiences as well as other applications that are practical and inclusive in gaming," suggesting official support might be possible in the future. "We don't have any plans to introduce blockchain technology into Minecraft," however.
