Hack attack on Sony and Xbox
20 January 2015
Lizard Squad hacking group was victimized by a shambolic attack that exposed the entire database of users.
The group claimed to have shut down the PlayStation and Xbox gaming networks over Christmas.
After that, it set up an online platform that allowed anyone who paid for its software to flood other sites with data.
The attack which exposed the customer list is just one of many targeted at the group and its tools.

Brian Krebs, an investigative journalist, broke the story about the hacking of the Lizard Stresser database. The Stresser let those who paid make use of it to overwhelm websites or kick people offline by bombarding the sites they were using with data.

Krebs did not provide a name. Krebs did not name who accessed the data , but said he had acquired an complete list of 14,241 individuals who had signed up.
Anyone who visited the Stresser website was warned by text message in the login box. It advised them to change their password which they had created when they signed up.
Krebs said in a blog entry that the Lizard Squad had not taken enough precautions to protect the login information and contact details given by users.
Krebs declared that all passwords and usernames registered were stored plain text, noting that just a handful of people had paid for it.
Tech news site Ars Technica also got hold of the database dump, which was posted for a brief time on the Mega file-sharing system. It claimed that the majority of people who utilized it were gamers who wanted to stop rivals from playing an exact game. Minecraft servers were a favorite user of Stresser, it said.
Ars Technica said the dump of the database could create issues for anyone who used it as the IP addresses of a lot of them were obscured and could, with a little effort, be recovered.
The plundering of the database comes just after other experts in the field of computers dismantled the tools that Lizard Squad has been using. One of the hackers revealed the source code for an application that was used to attack IRC chat network users.
In addition, shortly after the website was created the computer science student Eric Zhang managed to enumerate the names of all people who had signed up using a very simple script.
"That took only 10 minutes to complete," he said.
He said he was not shocked that the entire database was plundered because when he looked at the site, he noticed that public access to the server behind it hadn't been blocked.
He claimed that the site was run by a person who had no formal expertise in software engineering.
"Most of what they're doing isn't really impressive," he said. "Anyone can do this. It takes only time.
Mr Krebs stated that Lizard Squad was being targeted by security professionals who were irritated by their sudden notoriety.
He also said that there was a general consensus in the security industry that these people are out of their minds. If we don't find justice for some teens from Western countries who are rubbing it into everyone's faces, that's a sad state.
He said that the group survived due to the length of time it required for investigations to be conducted and the members to be identified. Recent Lizard Squad arrests seemed to have resulted in only the capture of some of its hangers on , but left some core members free.
