Minecraft: Axolotls - how to Control an Axolotl in The Cliffs & Caves Update

Minecraft: Axolotls - How to tame an axolotl in the Cliffs & Caves update
- - - - -

Minecraft's Axolotls are available finally, as one of three adorable new creatures added to the game in the recent Caves and Cliffs update.

We're not going to blame anyone if you took a look at these goofy little charmers and just knew that you had to have one of your very own We've compiled everything you must know about finding feeding, taming, and breeding Minecraft Axolotls.

Minecraft Axolotls: Where they appear Can you control axolotls in Minecraft How can you breed axolotls within Minecraft Axolotl colors: breeding rare blue axolotls Are Minecraft Axolotls dangerous?

Minecraft axolotls: where they spawn

Axolotls from the real world have been found in the wild in two lakes in Mexico, one of which is no longer in existence. Even though Minecraft's axolotl population is subject to certain limitations on where they can be born, you can rest at ease knowing that they are easier to find than they are in the real world.

Axolotls will only spawn under the following conditions:

They can only spawn in water and below Y-level 63. They are not able to spawn in darkness (Light Level 0). Their spawning location must be within five blocks of a stone-type building, and there must be a solid block in the area above their spawning area.

These restrictions meant that axolotl could only spawn in underground caves. With Cliffs and Caves Part 2 Mojang changed the locations. The game now has axolotl in Lush Caves, which lie beneath azalea trees

Can you tame axolotls in Minecraft?

Technically speaking, you can't control Minecraft's axolotls. We're sure it's disappointing.

However, you can have them follow you by holding a bucket of Tropical Fish (but not Tropical Fish items!) in your palm when you move closer to them. This lets you control them to an extent and allows you to be able to lead them to a place of your choosing.

Axolotls can be affixed to leads or picked up in a Bucket of Water to transport them further. An axolotl that has been picked up will never despawn and you can create a pet using this method.

It is also very useful to be capable of herding axolotls to aid in breeding them.

How do you breed axolotls in Minecraft

To breed axolotls, you need to bring two adults into the same area by using one of the methods mentioned above. This is the most simple and most effective method of getting them to breed.

The next step is to get them in the mood of love by giving them an ocean-fresh fish bucket.

Both will produce an axolotl while in Love Mode.

The baby will follow its parents around until it reaches adulthood in 20 minutes, though if you're truly impatient you can reduce the time by feeding your baby buckets of Tropical Fish. They grow up so fast!

Axolotl colours: breeding rare blue axolotl

Five colors are available for Minecraft axolotls

The four most common colours are lucy(brown), wild (brown), yellow (yellow), Cyan (actually whitish and aqua spots). In-game breeding gives a 50/50 chance for an infant axolotl to inherit the colour pattern of either parent.

There is a one in 1,200 chance that breeding will result in the rare blue axolotl.

A bit of interesting facts for those who are curious: unlike the other four patterns blue axolotls are not based on a real-life axolotl colouration, but are inspired by the Mudkip Pokemon. The low chance of spawning is an indication of the estimated number of Axolotls that are still in the wild. The more you know!

Are Minecraft axolotls hostile?

Axolotls can be considered to be a passive mob at least when it comes to the player.

They are hostile to all water mobs with the exception of turtles and dolphins.

If you're a finicky monster (or possibly just terribly clumsy) and inflict damage on your axolotl, it has an increased chance of dying dead rather than actually dying. It also suffers damage from other mobs, like those it is constantly aggroing for no apparent reason.

As it is hammered, it will slowly recover its health loss over time, and will not be attacked by other mobs until it returns to normal activity. In other words, these cute amphibians are actually quite resilient creatures.
