5 Things to Know for Dec. 16: Covid, Software, Biden, Condo Collapse, Extreme Weather

2. Cybersecurity

Your device could be at risk of being one of the most serious cyber security threats

Your device may be at risk from 'one the most grave' cyber security threats 02/18

Hackers associated with the governments of China, Iran, North Korea and Turkey are exploiting a serious vulnerability in a program used by big tech firms around the world, Microsoft has warned. Foreign hacking groups have apparently tried to exploit the vulnerability in Java-based software called "Log4j", which organizations utilize to track data in their applications. A top US cybersecurity official has said that there was no evidence to suggest that federal networks were affected by the vulnerability. The Log4j vulnerability could impact the majority of the internet. Apple's cloud computing service, security firm Cloudflare and Minecraft, one of the world's most popular video games, all run Log4j, according to researchers.

3. Make it better

Klobuchar: Manchin 'still at the negotiation table' over Build Back Better -- full interview at 09:05

The $1.75 trillion climate and economic package, the Build Back Better bill, is likely to remain in limbo until next year. Biden and Democrats had wanted to pass the bill before the end of the year. However talks between Biden, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin as well as a crucial swing vote, have not resulted in any resolution. The child tax credit is among the most important issues that have been a stumbling block to progress. For Biden this is a top priority that helps families and helps reduce child poverty. Manchin however, is seeking to get it to be left out of the bill. Even the case that Biden Biden and Manchin agreed, the bill must still be approved and finalized before it can be voted on.

4. Condo collapse

A Miami-Dade grand jury that is overseeing the Surfside condo collapse which killed 98 people in June has released a report detailing ways to avoid another tragedy. The report recommends more inspectors, staff, and money to identify unsafe buildings and raises standards for inspectors. The panel also recommended that the certification process for residential properties should begin much earlier than 40 years after the property is constructed. The engineering company hired for the Surfside condo's 40-year recertification in 2018 had identified "deep" concrete degrading however, they were unable to make repairs due to structural stability concerns. While it wasn't their task to uncover what caused the deadly collapse the grand jury observed that, six months later, the investigators aren't sure how it occurred.

5. Extreme weather

According to NOAA data, a tornado was first observed in Minnesota's southeastern area in December.
