Main argument: Zeitoun should be taken out of the curriculum
Intro: introduce Zeitoun’s crimes, Kathy’s feelings, and touch on how traumatic events impact others, introduce a ‘fake’ quote from the book
Point 1: Kathy’s suffering. (use quotations from articles about Kathy)
Kathy feeling unsafe in her own home
Dealing with abuse is a deeply personal thing that, by reading this book and discussing it, we bring to the limelight and make our business (we have no right to comment on Kathy’s situation or speculate on what she would want. From her quotations, the book harmed her a lot and we know that for sure.)
Point 2: The book portrays a terrible, abusive man as a hero. (Use Zeitoun quotes)
We should not be reading a book about a terrible man being portrayed as a hero because it plays into Zeitoun’s popularity among those who might not know the true story. Promoting this story is to say it’s ok to lie and believe that Zeitoun was a good person.
Point 3: As Moral Issues and RHS students, we have a responsibility to be respectful towards victims of immoral crimes, that is not up for debate. By reading this book, we disregard values that the class and RHS holds dear. (use quotes from articles and from rhs mission statement)
By continuing to circulate this book and believing that it is separate from Kathy’s suffering is cruel, selfish, and goes against the main idea of a Moral Issues class: being respectful.
