Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says that Epic Games will not restrict the sale or distribution of games that incorporate NFTs. Sweeney's statement follows a statement from Minecraft developer Mojang which laid out its stance not to allow blockchain technology or NFTs to be used in Minecraft.
One fan reached out to Sweeney via Twitter to inquire if Epic Games would adopt a similar approach to Mojang. However, Sweeney replied in the negative.
He says that developers should be able to decide what games they want to create and that you should be able to decide whether or not to play them. "I believe that operating system and stores manufacturers shouldn't try to dictate their views to other players. We shouldn't.
Another user reacted to Sweeney's comment asking how this differs from the Epic Games policy that prohibits discriminatory and hateful content. Sweeney explained that this was due to "editorial and branding judgments" and that Epic has chosen to "draw the line at the mainstream acceptable norms."
Some users of the PC gaming subreddit have expressed their displeasure with Sweeney's position. This is despite the fact that Epic CEO John McDonnell has been vocal against NFTs in the past. In September 2021, Sweeney publicly posted a copy of his email response in a Twitter reply that reads "We do not want to engage in NFTs since the whole field is currently caught up in a complex combination of scams, fascinating decentralised tech foundations, and scams."
Now Sweeney is certain that developers using the Epic Game store should have the option of exploring integrations with Epic Game store if they choose however. In a follow-up tweet, Sweeney stated that Cryptography is a complicated field.
