Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received feedback from the community inquiring for clarification and more transparency regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

We are updating our Minecraft Usage Guides to provide more detailed instructions on the latest technologies. However, we want to let you know that integrations using NFT with Minecraft are not something we support or allow. Let's take a closer look!

What is an NFT?

An NFT is a unique, non-editable, digital token that is part of a blockchain , and is often purchased using cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. An NFT can be associated with any type of digital asset like an MPEG or GIF, but the most common use case today is digital art such as JPEGs. An NFT is the token that identifies the owner of the original digital file. However, as with any digital file, it can be copied, moved, or even deleted. Blockchain and NFTs are also associated with speculation, where prices are driven up rapidly and as we have recently observed, could fall rapidly.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME

If you're a player or creator actively involved in buying, selling, or trading of NFTs which make use of Minecraft (like skins or worlds), we strongly suggest you read the details below. If you don't, these changes will not affect you.

OUR POLICY ON NFTs AND MINECRAFT

Our Minecraft Usage Guidelines outline how the server owner can charge for access and that everyone should have access to the same functionality. We have these rules in place to ensure that Minecraft remains a community in which everyone has access to the same content. NFTs however, could create models of exclusion and scarcity that do not conform to our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.

Blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated into our client and server apps. Also, it is not permitted to integrate blockchain technology into Minecraft in-game content like skins, worlds and other items be utilized by blockchain technology to create a precious digital asset. Our reasons are as follows.

NFT implementations have been introduced by some companies that can be linked to Minecraft world skin pack and files. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchain can be used in conjunction with Minecraft include creating Minecraft collectible NFTs, allowing players to earn NFTs through activities performed on a server, or earning Minecraft NFT rewards for doing activities that are not part of the game.

Each of these uses for NFTs and other Blockchain technologies result in digital ownership that is dependent on scarcity or the exclusion of. This is not in accordance with Minecraft values of creative inclusion playing with others, and sharing resources. NFTs do not encompass all members of our community and create a situation of the haves and have-nots. Irc101 The speculative pricing and investment mentality associated with NFTs take the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is not in line with the long-term enjoyment and success of our players.

We are also concerned that third-party NFTs aren't reliable and may cost players who purchase them. Certain third-party NFT implementations are dependent on blockchain technology and could require an asset manager who could disappear without notice. There have instances where NFTs were sold at fraudulent or artificially overvalued prices. We understand the inherent value of creativity within our game and aim to create a market where these values are acknowledged.

To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe, inclusive experience Blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications. It is also not used to create NFTs using any in-game content including skins and worlds, personal items, or other mods. We will also monitor the development of blockchain technology in the future to ensure that the above principles are not violated and to determine if it could offer more secure experiences or other useful, inclusive applications in gaming. However, we have no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft as of now.

We hope to have more to share with you soon. We have our guidelines here however, in the meantime, we'll have more information to share with you. Keep an eye out!
