Minecraft Says no to NFTs because they Cause'scarcity And Exclusion'

Minecraft players Minecraft won't be allowed to purchase game content such as worlds, persona items, skins, and other mods in the form of NFTs.



Minecraft the most-sold video game ever, will not support NFTs. They "create an environment where there are haves and the have-nots"



In a highly worded article posted on the Minecraft website yesterday (20 July) developer Mojang Studios said that the incorporation of NFTs would go against the game's values.



"NFTs and other blockchain technologies create digital ownership that is based on scarcity and exclusion, which does not align with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together," the company wrote.



"The speculation-based pricing and investment mentality around NFTs takes the focus away from the game and encourages profiteering, which is not in line with the long-term joy and the success of our players."



Minecraft said the statement was made in response to the feedback of members of the community who asked for clarifications on the studio's stance regarding NFTs and blockchain.



This means that Minecraft unlike other virtual world games, will not allow blockchain integrations into its server or client applications. In-game content such as skins, worlds and other items, and other mods can't be built upon NFTs.



Microsoft-owned Mojang said it was concerned that some third-party NFTs may not be reliable and can result in a loss for the players who purchase NFTs. It cited scenarios where third-party NFT managers could "disappear without notice" or NFTs could be "sold at artificially or fraudulently inflated prices".



"We recognize that what we create in our game has intrinsic worth and we strive for an environment in which these values are recognized."



The online gaming community has witnessed a surge in interest in blockchain technologies like NFTs, a subject that was discussed at Future Human earlier this year.



Companies like GameStop have expressed confidence in NFTs as an important element in the future of gaming, launching its own NFT marketplace.



However other companies aren't taking the plunge yet. https://gameaff.com/ EA's CEO stated that blockchain and NFTs could be the future of gaming. However, he also stated: "Right now it's not something we're driving against."
