Craftbukkit is a third-party Minecraft mod that allows users to utilize Minecraft plugins. The mod is available for download at Bukkit.org. It is a JAR file that runs the Minecraft server JAR.
After downloading the latest version of Craftbukkit rename the downloaded file to craftbukkit.jar. Download the recommended build or the development build. Recommended builds are more stable however they're usually older versions of Minecraft that users who have updated clients can't connect to. Unless the recommended build is also updated to the latest version of Minecraft you'll need to run the development build.
Copy the craftbukkit.jar file to the same directory that contains your minecraft_server.jar. This article assumes you already have a running Minecraft Server. If not, read my article on creating your own Minecraft Server.
You can start your Minecraft server in the same way as you normally do but replace minecraft_server.jar with craftbukkit.jar. You may want to increase the amount of RAM that is allocated to your server, as Craftbukkit will require more memory, especially with plugins. Craftbukkit will begin to initialize itself and create a configuration file called bukkit.yml. This file is not required to be changed and is a basic.
What's next for Bukkit is choosing and installing plugins. The plugins.bukkit.org section of the Bukkit.org website lists all available plugins. You can search for plugins with keywords or browse them by category. Plugins which haven't been updated recently likely won't work with the latest version of Craftbukkit/Minecraft. You can download the plugin from a page.
Downloading and installing a plugin is quite simple. Craftbukkit will automatically create the JAR file. This change will only take effect if the server is restarted. The plugin will also generate an additional folder with the same name as the JAR file that contains configuration files and other assets needed to run the plugin.
If you downloaded a zip/rar file you'll need to unzip/unrar it using a program that can handle these extensions. These files should be transferred to your plugin folder. Make sure that the JAR file is located in the root folder of the plugins folder. Restart your server and the new plugin will be activated.
