Minecraft Says no to NFTs because they Cause'scarcity And Exclusion'

Minecraft players Minecraft won't be able to purchase in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items and other mods in the form of NFTs.



Minecraft, the top-selling video game ever is not compatible with NFTs because they "create an atmosphere of haves and the not-so-haves".

Mojang Studios, a Minecraft developer, announced yesterday (20 July) that NFTs would be against the game's fundamental values in a clearly written post on the Minecraft site.



The company said that NFTs and other blockchain technologies create digital ownership based upon the exclusion of resources and scarcity. This is not in the spirit of Minecraft values of creative inclusion, playing together, and sharing our resources.



"The investment and speculative pricing mindset around NFTs takes the focus away from the game and encourages profiteering, which is incompatible with the long-term enjoyment and success of our players."



Minecraft said the statement is in response to comments from members of the community who asked for clarifications regarding the studio's position regarding NFTs and blockchain.



This means that, unlike other virtual world games Minecraft will not permit blockchain integrations into its client and server applications. In-game content like worlds, skins, persona items and other mods cannot be built on NFTs.



Mojang is a Microsoft-owned business It also said it was concerned about third-party NFTs. These NFTs could be unreliable and result in a cost to those who purchase them. It also outlined scenarios in which third-party NFT managers could "disappear suddenly" or NFTs could "be sold at fraudulently or artificially high prices".



"We recognize that the creation within our game has intrinsic value, and we strive to create a platform where those values can be recognised."



The online gaming community has witnessed a surge in interest in blockchain technologies like NFTs which was discussed at Future Human earlier this year.



Companies such as GameStop have expressed confidence in NFTs as a significant element in the future of gaming, and have launched their own NFT marketplace.



Some companies aren't all-in. EA's CEO has said that blockchain and NFTs could be the future of gaming. However, he has said: "Right now it's not something we're driving against."
