I like minecraft, frequently. However, it requires some tweaks in order for me to really enjoy it. These are the changes I will be able to document.
First, we require mcpatcher so that we can use HD texture pack and install mods. Minecraft servers Get it here: https://github.com/pclewis/mcpatcher/downloads

Next, we need the right modifications:

Once you have all the mods installed, start Mcpatcher. You can add a variety of mods to mcpatcher (Mods Add to the menu). Also , point it to your minecraft.jar. You can find it in /.minecraft/bin/
Check the following mods and make sure they are in the right order. If they aren't, use the arrows at the bottom of the GUI to arrange them:
1. AutoSwitchMod
2. ModLoader
3. OptiFine
4. Custom Colors
5. Random Mobs
6. Connected Textures
7. Better Skies
Click on patch. Mcpatcher is likely to be annoyed, but click yes.
Finally we'll need a reliable texture package. I like this one: http://bdcraft.net/download-purebdcraft-texturepack-for-minecraft, 128 bit. Much more robust and Minecraft does not seem to manage its own well. Download it and save the .zip to ~/.minecraft/texturepacks. You will be able select it from the menu in game.
