Minecraft used To Teach Children Molecular Chemistry

Minecraft used to teach children molecular chemistry

5 November 2015

Virtual world-building game Minecraft is played by millions of kids around the world could be utilized in schools to teach children the basics of chemistry.

A group of Hull University students created an educational version of the game that allows players to investigate specially designed molecular structures and learn about the science behind.

Our aim is to involve young scientists in fun and interactive ways.

Minecraft players use building blocks to build structures and landscapes.

They are encouraged to find treasures and other things.

'Fiendishly difficult'

The students designed their project with the help of the university's Minecraft expert, Joel Mills, and senior lecturer in biological chemistry Dr. Mark Lorch.

Dr Lorch said: "Minecraft is a fabulous tool to study the structure of landscapes, buildings and even anatomy.

"So why not molecules?" It was shown to a group of children yesterday, and there were lots of gasps and awes.

"This draws their attention. It's a novel approach to engage them and deliver information to them.

In addition to the chemistry and structures, the students have created a host of other surprises for children to roam around and discover.

Dr Lorch said that you could simply look around the molecules and read the information. There are also many treasure chests with books, puzzles and other goodies.

"Some are easily found but others are extremely difficult. You'll likely have learned a fair amount of chemistry if it's possible to find them all.

Outreach

Dr Lorch who also plays an obligation to inspire young scientists, said: "If I've given them this information in the Minecraft world and showed them how to access it, they're much more likely to go and learn more about it than if I had presented the information in an PowerPoint presentation."

The Hull team is currently experimenting with the game, which is called MolCraft, in a number of secondary schools in London as part of various outreach initiatives for universities.

It can also be used in primary schools to teaching fundamental science concepts, like how atoms are formed to make molecules.

It's also available on Minecraft's educational library, which contains versions for students and teachers.

This isn't the first time Minecraft has been used to engaging children in science-related topics.

A world has been designed to teach quantum physics. many schools in Northern Ireland are using an modified version to encourage creative writing and engage students in city planning.
