Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received some feedback from the community inquiring for clarification and more transparency regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

While we are currently working on updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to offer more precise guidelines for new technologies, we want to take the chance to let you know that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we allow or even support. Let's take a closer look.

WHAT IS A NFT?

An NFT is a unique, non-editable, digital token that is part of a blockchain , and is typically purchased using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. An NFT can be linked to any digital asset, including an MPEG and a GIF. However, digital art like JPEGs is the most popular application for an NFT. An NFT is the token that indicates the owner of the original digital file. However any digital file can be copied, deleted or moved. Blockchain and NFTs have been linked to speculation. This is the reason why prices can rise rapidly and, as we've seen, may fall quickly.

What are the implications for me?

If you're a creator actively involved in the trading, buying, or selling of trading of NFTs that use Minecraft (like skins or worlds), we strongly suggest you read the details below. Otherwise, it's likely these changes won't affect you.

Our MINECRAFT POLICY AND NFTS

Our Minecraft Usage Guidelines outline how the owner of a server can charge for access and how everyone should have the same functionality. We have these rules in place to ensure that Minecraft remains a community in which everyone has access to the same content. NFTs however, could create models of scarcity and exclusion that do not conform to our Guidelines and the nature of Minecraft.

To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not permitted to be used inside our client and server applications, nor can Minecraft game-specific content, such as skins, worlds persona items, or other mods be incorporated by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset. Feah Our reasons follow.

NFT implementations have been launched by a few companies and can be connected to Minecraft world skin pack and files. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchain can be utilized in conjunction with Minecraft include creating Minecraft collectible NFTs which allow players to earn NFTs through the activities they perform on servers, or earn Minecraft NFT rewards for activities outside of the game.

Each of these uses for NFTs and other Blockchain technologies result in digital ownership that is built on scarcity or exclusion. This is not in line with Minecraft values of inclusion through creativity and playing with others, as well as sharing our resources. NFTs do not include all of our players and create a stalemate of the haves and have-nots. NFTs encourage profit-seeking and speculative pricing which we believe is not compatible with long-term happiness and success for our players.

We are also concerned about third-party NFTs not being secure and could end up costing players who purchase them. Some third-party NFT implementations are also dependent on blockchain technology and may require an asset manager who might disappear without notice. There have also instances where NFTs were sold at fraudulent or artificially price increases. We are aware that the creation process within our game is of great value and we work hard to create a market where those values are recognized.

In order to ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a secure and enjoyable experience, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications. Nor can be used to create NFTs that are associated with any in-game content, including skins, worlds and other items, or other mods. We will also be keeping a close eye on how blockchain technology evolves in the future to ensure that the above principles are not violated and determine whether it will allow for more secure experiences or other practical and inclusive gaming applications. We don't plan to implement blockchain technology in Minecraft at the moment.

We will be providing more details to you in the near future. In the meantime If you're interested in learning more on our guidelines they can be found here. Keep an eye out!
