Minecraft Says it Wants nothing to do with NFTs, Blockchain

While certain industries are taking a stand on NFTs but the videogame community is making it clear that NFTs are "No F'n Thank" in their field.



The most recent company to stand against non-fungible tokens: Mojang Studios, the developer of the massively popular video game, Minecraft.



In a statement put out today on the official Minecraft website, titled simply "Minecraft and NFTs," the company made it crystal clear that it will not allow any sort of blockchain or NFT integration into its game.



Mojang Studios and Minecraft laid out a few reasons for why they are opposed to NFTs. They stated that fake shortages play a significant part in it. NFTs, also known as tokens that are not fungible, are basically digital assets kept on a blockchain. A unique token is minted and then linked to a media file in order to declare ownership of that piece, which turns NFTs into speculative assets.



The statement explains that Minecraft is not opposed to revenue-generating, and uses the example of users charging for access to a Minecraft server as a valid use case. However, since NFTs could alter the game's dynamics and give players who have monetary advantages in the game The Minecraft developer is opposed to the technology.



"To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not permitted to be integrated within our Minecraft client and server applications. Nor can be used to create NFTs for any in-game content, including skins, worlds, items, or any other mods," declares the statement.



The developer also brought up concerns regarding the reliability of third-party firms that mint Minecraft-related NFTs, and their tendency to drop projects, and fraudulently inflate prices on NFT aftermarkets.



"No blockchain for block games," as Molly White of the website Web3 is Going Great concisely stated it. The website is a watchdog of frauds, scams and dramas in the Web3 world. This includes NFT projects and cryptocurrency.



As White points out that the value of current (and illegal) Minecraft NFT projects tanked due to the news of Mojang Studios' statement. NFT Worlds, also associated with the token, saw the token's value and its NFT floor prices drop by more than 70%.



Minecraft's Mojang Studios is far from the first video game company to operate completely free of NFTs. Gamers have stated that they aren't keen on the idea of purchasing NFTs in addition to the video games they already own. "It's absolutely not NFTs. Absolutely not. You can't trade them or sell them. This isn't making use of any blockchain technology, and certainly not NFTs." said Grace Chen, Sony VP of network marketing, loyalty, and licensed merchandise, in an interview with The Washington Post.



Mojang Studios ended its statement by stating that they would keep track of the development of blockchain technology for future applications. However, this leaves the door open to future uses based on the current possibilities. However, those who dislike NFTs will be able to gain another victory, at least for the near future.
