Max and Alison are evidence that differences don't stand in the way of friendship. Max is always on the lookout for a new adventure even if it means getting in trouble, while Alison prefers to adhere to the rules. But both of them are intrigued by the battered old journal Max discovers and the bizarre gate that its mysterious author, the Enchanter, describes as a gateway into a realm of danger referred to as the Nether.
After they use the journal's instructions to craft the portal, Max and Alison squabble over whether to remain secure in the Overworld or to journey into the Nether to search for the Enchanter . . . until a tragic accident takes the decision for them.
Max and Alison are trapped in a new world. Freya, a fierce warrior who lives in the Nether along Bunny Biter, also finds them an all-around ally. With Freya's help, and the clues that lie in the pages of the mysterious journal, Max and Alison embark on a journey to find the Enchanter and save the world, even as the Nether challenges their skills and friendship-to the limit.
