How to get your Blog Crashed

If you host your website on your own (or have any other service that is affected by visitor numbers) There's a good chance that we will wreck it.

This is also known as the Slashdot Effect, which happens when a big site overwhelms another smaller site with traffic. Matticus, one of the men who can take lots of things, crashed this year due to WoW.com links. This led to the name of this article in a backchannel conversation.

To paraphrase Arnold Toynbee, we are a large friendly dog in a small room. When we look over your blog posts and spot something we like (...that didn't turn out the way I expected) we will wag our tail and knock your server over. So before you ask us for a link take a review of the traffic you're ready to handle. A spike that takes your site offline can make it difficult for visitors to remember to come back; they'll click over, receive an error message and, in the majority of cases, forget to try again.

Your traffic might not increase in the same way depending on the subject. We do however apologize for any inconvenience for the possibility of being linked on a date when Blizzard releases patch notes or whatever.

The most effective way to make us /facepalm is by jumping up and down, howling that you haven't been connected.

There are many reasons why we won't link you, even if you've submitted a request:

The words you wrote might not be relevant to an article we're working on.

What you wrote may be relevant to an article that was published recently, or which is in the queue but without the writer to add it.

Most often, we get overwhelmed and a writer who could have used your link didn’t see it.

Your website is littered with spelling and grammar errors which could be irritating to our commenters.

We are not interested in your site because it contains sexual images, cussing and other sexually explicit content.

On a more personal note If you've ever been hateful to another blogger and I learn about it, you'll never receive a link from me.

The chances are high that your blog post falls into one or more of these categories. So before you send us an angry email or a comment, make sure to check your blog to make sure that images of scantily-clad women aren't splattering across your sidebars, or that your text will not cause an English teacher scream. If not, then #3 is very likely. Send us another link, but please not include a message accusing us of being hateful. We don't like people who feel entitled.

We get so many submissions that are just links. Yours will be noticed if it contains an explanation of the topic of your post or if it is beneficial to a specific columnist of a particular class. We want to link excellent posts! https://grnonline.info/ Don't make it time-consuming for us to figure out the content of your post!

The other method to make us smile is to leap up and down yelling that you were linked.

We don't like being targeted because you didn't want any attention to your public post on a public blog or forum. If you post it online then by definition, what you wrote isn't a private thought.

We share people's names because we think that they wrote something cool or interesting and not to get them in trouble. But, we're not in a position to judge what that you posted will land you in trouble. A lot of WoW.com team members are members of social media platforms that allow members to "lock down" posts to other members of the community. If a post is blocked by the poster, we interpret that to mean it's not fair game for an article. If a post doesn't get locked, it's available to anyone who is a member of the community whether they're a member or not. If you don't want something linked, but you are posting on a semi-public or public website, you can talk to your fellow community members about what you'd like to share and don't want publicized. 99 percent of the time it was a member of the community who provided the information to us simply because they thought it was cool. We agreed.

Bottom line; don't post anything online that you wouldn't want your mother reading.

Do not panic If traffic is slowing down.

Most websites eventually settle into traffic patterns that reflect the true people who are reading their content. Bloggers typically write about a spec of one class, or even a single class, as it's hard and time-consuming to write fluently about several classes. This limits the audience for your blog. If you write about Holy Paladins, then Affliction Warlocks aren't going to be able to reach your blog through Google hits or be interested in the guides you create. It's not personal -- they're just not part your audience. Your traffic may not always appear like a continuously increasing squiggly line on a graph. If you produce good material, help people access and understand quality information, and keep building an excellent archive, don't worry about your numbers. You're doing your job.

Be patient.

Rome wasn't built in a single day, and you're unlikely to go from a few pageviews per day to 50K in a month or two months or even 6 months. Keep going, we're here for you.
