Developer Creates a Wonderful Programming Font Based On Minecraft

North Carolina-based developer Idrees Hassan loves Minecraft so much that he recently created a monospaced font for programming that is based on the typeface in the highly acclaimed video game. The result, Monocraft, gives programmers the feel of being in Minecraft without the use of any game assets.

Ars.'s Hassan said, "To be truthful, I made this font for the sheer fun to learn how fonts work." "Existing Minecraft fonts lacked a lot of details, such as proper kerning or size of pixels. MEGA BLOG So I decided to make my own. After that there was nothing that could stop me from going overboard and turning it into a real programming font. Plus, now I can write Minecraft plugins using a Minecraft font!"

Hassan designed the Minecraft font that can be used for development purposes. He added some serifs to make letters like "i" and 'l easier to identify, created new programming characters and improved the arrow characters to make it easier to read. (Ligature characters combine popular strings of characters used in operations like "!=" into one new character, but they're not always popular with developers.)

Monocraft can be downloaded from GitHub free of charge (get Monocraft.otf on the Releases Page). Monocraft is not officially endorsed by Microsoft or Mojang and is considered to be a fan project. It's compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux as an OpenType font. To install it on Windows you need to right-click on the font file and choose "Install." Double-click the font file on the Mac and choose "Install Font" from the Font Book window.

Prior to that, Hassan created an authentic reproduction of the Minecraft typeface that features variable spacing similar to the font used in the game. It is also available on GitHub.

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson originally created the Minecraft font for an earlier game called Legend of the Chambered, in the year 2008. The Minecraft font has an old-fashioned pixel art style that is similar to 16 and 8-bit bit console games. It was a perfect match for Notch's minimalist style. It has now been given a new purpose as a fun font for developers everywhere.
