Minecraft is Closing in on 140 Million Monthly Active Users

Hello, here's your semi-frequent reminder that Minecraft is quite large. Microsoft chief executive officer Satya Nadella revealed during the latest financial update of the company that Mojang's build 'em up hit nearly 140 million monthly active users between January 1 until March 31. However, Minecraft's current engagement rate is 30% higher than it was last year.



Nadella adds that Minecraft creators have made more than $350 million through "more than one billion downloads of mods, add-ons and other experiences in Minecraft". That's not including activity that isn't part of Microsoft's marketplace either.



The pandemic is likely to have led to an influx of gamers to Minecraft, but there are plenty of other reasons driving the interest in the game, too. Last year we got Mojang's blocky take on Diablo, Minecraft Dungeons, and this year, we'll get the Caves and Cliffs update in two parts. Mojang explained that it split the update into two parts in order to maintain the quality, reduce technical complexity and ensure that the development team is healthy. Expect to see new blocks and mobs this summer, and even more complex parts connected to world generation in the coming holiday season.



In Microsoft's financial statement Microsoft reports that it racked up $41.7 billion in revenue, up 19% from the same period last year.



"Over a year into the pandemic digital adoption rates aren't slowing down. They're accelerating, and it's just the beginning," Nadella says.
