Minecraft's ray-tracing feature for Windows 10 has made its release from beta eight months after the feature was first made available for users to test. The look and feel of the sandbox game has been changed by the addition of the ability to trace rays to NVIDIA's RTX graphic cards. We've mentioned earlier in the year that Minecraft feels more immersive because of the realistic lighting, reflections and shadows it brings. While the game is blocky, the in-game sunlight appears real. Shadows and reflections can make it feel as if you're in the real world.
To be able to enjoy the benefits of ray tracing to the game, you'll need to play it on a computer with one of NVIDIA's GPUs that's capable of rendering rays. The benefits it offers will only be apparent in worlds and maps that utilize a specific physically based rendering texture pack, however you don't need to perform anything to enable it as it's already turned on by default. Other players who do not have access to this feature will simply see those worlds as normal visuals.
In its announcement, NVIDIA says ray tracing is more demanding on your GPU, and so it makes use of its DLSS AI rendering technology to ensure Minecraft with RTX can keep running by minimum 60 FPS at 1920x1080. The game is able to played at 4K and 60FPS when using more advanced GPU models (RTX3080 and 3090).
You can download worlds that you can enjoy with ray tracing on from the Marketplace or make your own with the assistance from NVIDIA's starter pack in case you require it. NVIDIA and Minecraft are also releasing two new worlds free of charge: Colosseum RTX has already been released, and Dungeon Dash RTX will shortly be available.
