Fortnite may still get the lion's share of public attention However, it doesn't mean that it's hurting the other phenomenon. Microsoft's Helen Chiang told Business Insider in an interview that Minecraft currently has 112 million active users each month, an increase of 20 million compared to figures in October 2018. This is inclusive of all players, not just those who play via an Xbox Game Pass. However it's still an incredible achievement for a game that's been around for a little over a decade.
Chiang said it partly due to the imaginative game’s evergreen status that players "keep returning" to it. It's possible to play Fortnite or other games that get the spotlight however there's a good chance that you'll want to build tunnels and homes in Minecraft after that.
Other factors are likely important as well. In addition to its accessibility across platforms, Minecraft's unwieldy graphics and simple gameplay allow you to play on devices with modest hardware regardless of whether it's a budget PC or smartphone. You can still enjoy a great experience with the smallest investment in hardware.
Microsoft's challenge is to keep the game relevant. The augmented reality of Minecraft Earth helps, as do other methods to improve the appearance. It's not clear that's enough, however. Roblox recently crossed 100 million monthly players and Fortnite may not be far from that (it was reported to have 78.3 million users in August 2018). It may not take long for other games to catch the popular culture.
