After you've Installed NetBSD

Clara and I run Minecraft on our home FreeBSD server in a jail that keeps Java and other dependencies in one place. Although I haven’t tested it, the theory is that it is possible to run the server in any location that Java supports, which includes Linux, NetBSD and possibly other operating systems.

Well, I decided I could not let it go! The positive side is that you can also run a Minecraft server on your other favorite OS. This article explains the method I used however I'm sure there are other options.

Getting Java installed

After you have installed NetBSD and configure networking and enable pkgin you will need an OpenJDK to play Minecraft.

OpenJDK 17 is required for Minecraft 1.17 and later. OpenJDK 16 however, is the most up-to-date snapshot as of July 20,22. To confirm, you can search:

If it's still 16 You can pull the most recent packages by opening your repo file:

and changing the repo URL, in my case from 9.0 to 9.0_current:

Thank you very much to ryoon@ for working on this. He has done so much for NetBSD I feel that he owes me at least the possibility of a cup of coffee or a beer every time I visit Japan.

We can now install, along with some other useful tools.

Running Minecraft

You can use this location to run Minecraft just like any Java-enabled server. I have all my files in one place:

Then log into my local account and start:

Now is the time to start!

Java will throw an exception regarding a system that is not supported, which NetBSD users know well. It's safe to ignore, based on my testing.

Once you've started the server first time, don't forget to sign the EULA.

Create an introductory script

I like to symlink to minecraft.jar the most up-to-date version of the server

You can reference it in launch.sh using tmux to allow the server to remain active after disconnecting. I like to give Minecraft more memory too:

We're now ready to go!

Follow-up

The next step is creating a proper chroot environment for Java and Minecraft, similar to what I have done with FreeBSD jails. I have a NetBSD chroot exploration article that I have been working on for many years. I'll tidy it up and release it soon.
