Mojang made waves yesterday when it stated in unambiguous phrases, that NFTs are not welcome in Minecraft (opens in a new tab). This is a great news for gamers but not for those who have already committed to using blockchain technology in games such as NFT Worlds.
"NFT Worlds," a completely decentralized, fully customizable , and community-driven, play-to-ear gaming platform that allows world owners to create limitless metaverse experiences or games for players or exclusive communities within the worlds that they own," its website (opens new tab).
"Currently using Minecraft and its sprawling open-source ecosystem, NFT Worlds builds on the foundation of decades worth of open-source development within the Minecraft community. It radically extends it to create completely new kinds of 3D game based on voxels, which is decentralized metaverses backed by the Ethereum blockchain."
What that means, in essence is that it can support custom Minecraft servers where players can purchase virtual land parcels and earn (and spend) cryptocurrency. It's the kind of hybrid system that Mojang's blockchain policy seems specifically designed to shut down. It certainly had an effect: The price of $WRLD (opens new tab) fell immediately after the announcement by the studio.
In response to Mojang's latest policy, NFT Worlds has issued an official statement (opens in new tab) decrying Mojang and Minecraft as having "no regard for creators, builders, and players," and vowing to create its own game to replace it.
"We're creating a new game and platform based on many of the core mechanics of Minecraft, but with the advancement of technology and ongoing development Minecraft has been missing for years," NFT Worlds said. "This is not a rewrite of some open source Minecraft clone, which likely would violate the EULA or even risk legal action, this is completely made from scratch. The transition will also include a public facing brand identity change that is more user-friendly."
The Future Of NFT Worlds Read our statement below through the attached Twitter thread, or here: https://t.co/w0nf1f2xxnA thread pic.twitter.com/Oy2T7oXQVgJuly 22, 2022
The game will feature a "playstyle, look, and feel" similar to Minecraft, NFT Worlds said it will also feature performance optimizations, graphical improvements and new gameplay mechanics that will deliver "a more accessible, ownable, and enjoyable playing experience." It will be free for all players, and "completely free of the policy enforcement Microsoft and Mojang have over Minecraft." However it will also be compatible with older Minecraft server plugins, meaning that when it is time to switch platforms creators of content will be capable of making the switch with minimal fuss and muss.
Making a better Minecraft than Minecraft (while keeping it compatible with Minecraft) is an awfully big job and one that will be a subject to immediate and rigorous investigation from Microsoft however, NFT Worlds doesn't have many options. Minecraft servers Mojang has effectively shut the door on its business model, but a wholesale change to a different game would leave existing users and everything they've created so far, out in the cold. The only way to keep the wheels moving is to come up with something that functions like Minecraft without actually being Minecraft. This isn't an easy task.
In the more immediate future, NFT Worlds said it will make changes to its launcher and play pages in order to attract new players who aren't interested in the cryptocurrency angle. It also highlighted some important, high-stakes stakes for NFT Worlds future as a battle for both the philosophical and technological soul of the internet.
NFT Worlds stated that Microsoft has made it clear that they will always act in the best interests of their shareholders and balance sheets to the detriment innovation, user experience, and creators. "We believe an open, free, evolved version of Minecraft that Minecraft brought to the world will create the best option for creators, developers and ultimately gamers.
"We are fighting to ensure that everyone is benefited by the ecosystem's contributions. This is a huge task.
I have contacted Microsoft to get their opinion on the NFT Worlds plan. I will amend this post if and when I receive a reply.
