The company released an article on its blog entitled "Minecraft and NFTs" and acknowledged that some companies and creators have begun launching NFT projects associated with Minecraft world files and skin packs. The post also suggested Minecraft creators may make use of the game as a platform for creating and sell collectible NFTs that players could earn from activities on a Minecraft server or as a reward for doing activities in the real world.
Mojang stated in the post that blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated into Minecraft client and server apps. They also can't be used to create NFTs associated to any in-game content including skins and worlds.
"We will also be paying close attention to how blockchain technology evolves over time to ensure the above principles are withheld and to determine if it will enable more secure gaming or other more inclusive and practical applications in gaming," the company added. "However, we have no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft at the moment."
In response to the backlash of players, and the collapse of the cryptocurrency market, the traditional game industry has been trying to separate itself from NFTs in recent months. Sony announced last week that it was launching the feature of digital collectibles in its new PlayStation Rewards program. However, Sony clarified emphatically that its collectibles are "definitely not NFTs." Ubisoft, which became the first major game publisher to experiment with NFTs last fall, ended its experiment after four months. Valve, the Steam marketplace's owner, said in October that it would not accept any games using blockchain technology or NFT. However, Epic Games, Fortnite creator, has recently opened doors to such products on its PC gaming store.
Microsoft hasn't provided a clear opinion on the issue in relation to its gaming properties before the present. But Xbox chief and Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer stated to Protocol last year that he was "leery" of the "near-term kind of hysteria around NFTs" and the possibility of fraud, scams and the pyramid scheme nature of the crypto market, which could lead to consumers losing huge amounts of real money quickly. Spencer was also quoted by Axios last fall that NFTs had the potential to be exploitative and the market contained "a variety of things that aren't things you would want to have in your store."

Mojang's blog article echoes similar views. "Each of these applications of NFTs and other blockchain technologies result in digital ownership built on scarcity and exclusion which is not in alignment with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together," the company wrote. "NFTs are not inclusive of all of our community and create a scenario of the haves and have-nots.
