Coronavirus: Leicester Church Uses Minecraft to Teach Bible To Teens

Coronavirus: Leicester church uses Minecraft to teach Bible to teenagers

17 May 2020

During the lockdown the church turned to Minecraft to teach their children about Christianity.

The server is being used to recreate Leicester's St John the Baptist Church so that the youth group can have a place for Bible classes.

Josh Young, the organizer said that it was an opportunity to meet young people "whereever they are" and interact with them in a setting that is familiar.

They can also make use of virtual reality to design their own lessons.

Mr Young, for example made an underwater whale to educate them about Jonah's story. He also challenged the teens to build boats to discover more about Jesus"calming a storm..

The 27-year old youth worker added, "Having a community of young people is very important and that's what I was looking to maintain during the lockdown."

"They can't be friends with their friends, and some are struggling right now. They can chat, play and interact with each other on Minecraft without ever physically being there. It's a way to interact and build communities.

"Young people are online" and the Bible teaches us to connect with people wherever they are in their community.

"Jesus broke the boundaries of what people thought was normal worship, He would be pleased with the thought that the church is moving forward."

About 20 children, aged between 11 and 17 spend two-and-a-half hours on the server on Wednesdays.

During that time, they are free to explore the world or pursue their own ideas, but for 30 minutes they're transported to a common area to complete a Bible-themed challenge.

Mr. Young stated that they'd made sure that the adults could control the children's involvement and stop any bad language.

Rosie, 15 years old, is one of the teens who regularly play at the club. She told us, "I love it because it allows me to talk to my friends while playing, it's like meeting up for our regular youth club."

"I thought it was awesome that Josh brought everyone to one place. We also had a contest to build a boat from Matthew Chapter 8, in which Jesus stopped a storm. My team won because we created lightning storm clouds."
