The Problems With 'Possums
A lot of us feel nearer to nature by setting up bird feeders within our backyard. One of the problems associated with bird feeders is the unwanted guests that this bird feeder may attract.
If you're to put together a camera and take nighttime photos of the area below your bird feeder, choosing stunned at all the different animals that can make an appearance.
Opossums (possums), in addition to a great many other species appear to have a built-in GPS that knows the place of each bird feeder within the neighborhood. These animals make nightly house calls to completely clean the seeds that birds have scattered on the ground beneath the bird feeder.
Although possums have an overabundance of teeth (50) than some other North American animal, they usually acquiesce to raccoons, and often will often fight with skunks over those discarded bird-seeds. Some with the nighttime skunk odors you smell are due to those skunk and possum confrontations.
As these nocturnal animals visit and from a bird feeder, occasionally their route will need them along the foundation of your home. They may stop at your air conditioner for a drink of water in the condensation pipe around the unit. That's when the genuine trouble begins.
Many ac units have openings within the frame where the system sits. Animals can squeeze through these openings and gain access into the crawlspace. Now they have a very safe place to live, next to a water and food source.
Not being house-broken, these animals deposit waste (usually down the inside foundation wall) through your house, and you might will experience unpleasant odors filtering up into your home. Another problem primarily connected with possums are fleas.
Over time, as fleas multiply on these animals some from the fleas will will show up through the floor and in the house. Our company gets several phone calls every month at home owners with flea problems who don't even own pets. Many times those fleas are the response to a possum and other animal within the crawlspace.
Now onto a few from the more unpleasant possum problems. One is odor. Possums will exude a really unpleasant green secretion from time to time of distress and it is a significant smell to behold. Possums also use a very short lifespan. Whether it's a design flaw, bad luck or simply plain not enough intelligence, possums survive average only 24 months inside the wild. If you have one living inside crawlspace vid totally new a higher level possum problem.
Of each of the dead animals we remove from crawlspaces, approximately 80% are possums. The odor of a clicking possum is one area you truly desire to avoid, as are the fleas looking for the new "live" host.
I hope looking over this piece means you to practice a little something new about possums as well as the problems they could pose.
