The planets have aligned again and I've been back to Minecraft. Every now and then I'm compelled to get a group of friends together and create servers and then spend a few hours every week creating crazy things and fighting to survive in a crowded world. Normally hosting the server from my laptop. Just another wordpress site However, this time I wanted to try something different (read more complicated). I'm a developer, and I have the power of cloud at my fingertips, so why not spin up an Linode instance and host the server there?
My Linode instance was already set up to host the server, so I decided to use it the first night. A paltry 1 core, 1GB memory machine is able to run a nice static website, but it's a disaster in running an online gaming server. This is the most effective way to ensure that your server never isn't crashing and runs out of memory.
Linode's 4 core and 4GB memory instances are recommended if are looking to play the game. If you don't plan to have hundreds of players on the server at once it will be more than enough. The best thing is that these instances cost $0.06/hour. Last night, I spent four hours playing with a friend, and it cost me 24Cper hour.
I've written a shell script that will do the installation automatically and then sign the EULA. When I want to invite a friend to play, I can click three buttons in Linode’s administrator panel, then connect into the server and run my script. When we're done, I can copy the world onto my Mac via FTP and shut down the server. It's cheap, simple and quick.
