"Wilbur counted up to ten and back down again, and then again, then a third time and a fourth time still, breathing deep and negating eye contact with clenched fists while still trying to keep himself discrete. His eyes welled with unbidden tears until they spilt forth, bringing with them a sense of defeat as he gave in to the sound of Tommy worriedly calling his name."

"In the kitchen, Wilbur worried and worried and worried, worrying his hands around the spatula handle and worrying the bread a bit too harshly with butter. He worried the eggs as he whisked, nearly dropping the metal utensil into the plastic bowl, and he worried off into the distance as he started to wash the used dishes while the food cooked on the stove, the tap running for nothing and eggs racing towards being overcooked if not for a lousy call from the centre of Wilbur's spacy nature, Tommy, warning him without even looking up from his phone.

Tommy starting to cry out of nowhere and Wilbur being completely bewildered and then Tommy walking away like it didn't happen

Tommy's little mind games when he comes back to the kitchen and then Wilbur also starts wondering if he's dreaming

(i didn’t get a chance to comment towards the csa discussion but as someone with experience in that regard i will say that topical fiction regarding things outside of your personal experience is A-Okay and quite common, as long as you can handle it respectfully and have proper content warnings then there is no problem. given the rest of the story so far, i trust that you’ll be able to portray it accurately and respectfully.)

okay SO!! i very much appreciate your balance between the progression of both tommy and wilbur’s discussions of trauma and the progression of their familial relationship. both of these things are happening concurrently and sometimes i think it can be difficult to navigate plot lines like that without accidentally prioritizing focus on one of them, and i feel like you’ve done quite well with it so far. the lovejoy cameo was precious and they seem like they’d be easygoing enough for this to work. (didn’t irl wilbur literally recruit mark while he was delivering food to them? just snatched him right up. wilbur is in the business of collecting strays whether he likes it or not.) it’s also made me eager to see what other character cameos there might be and how they react to everything. neither will nor tommy are exactly social recluses and now we’ve had beeduo and lovejoy witness Something Being Up and it just seems like they probably can’t keep this under wraps for long. also wilbur is one person, and an entire traumatized child is not exactly like adopting a fish. (or maybe it’s exactly like adopting a fish, considering the smallest negative reaction to their environment can seriously harm or kill them… goldfish tommy pog?) overall this was a LOVELY chapter and i enjoyed it a lot!! i am both excited and terrified to see how it continues :) /pos /lh /hj"
