I like minecraft, frequently. It's got to be tweaked to make me more interested in minecraft. These are the changes I will make.
We first need Mcpatcher to use the HD texture packs and install mods. Get it here: https://github.com/pclewis/mcpatcher/downloads

This should open an easy GUI. We'll get to this in a minute.
Next, we need to install the correct mods.

ModLoader: Although I don't remember the reason I have it installed, I suspect it is for a reason. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/75440-v131-risugamis-mods-preliminary-updates/
So now you have all the required mods, you can launch the mcpatcher. You can add a variety of mods to mcpatcher (Mods > Add to the menu). You can point it to your minecraft.jar. You can find it in /.minecraft/bin/
Examine the mods below and ensure they're in the correct order. If they don't, use the arrows at the bottom of the GUI to rearrange them:
1. AutoSwitchMod
2. ModLoader
3. OptiFine
4. Custom Colors
5. Random Mobs
6. Connected Textures
7. Better Skies
Click on patch. Game Servers Mcpatcher is likely to complain, but you are able to click yes.
Finally, we need a good texture package. I like this one: http://bdcraft.net/download-purebdcraft-texturepack-for-minecraft, 128 bit. Much higher and Minecraft doesn't seem to handle itself well. Download it and save the .zip to ~/.minecraft/texturepacks. You should be able to select it from the menu in game.
