Minecraft: new Marketplace For Community Creators

Minecraft A new marketplace for community creators By Steffan Powell Newsbeat reporter

10 April 2017

Minecraft wants to make it easier to access content made by community members and fans.

Many players have already built intricate worlds for exploration or adventures to take pleasure in, or altered the game to create new experiences.

They will be able sell content through the game on the new Minecraft Marketplace.

Producer John Thornton told Newsbeat that the platform is designed to help entrepreneurs start businesses.

People who create adventure maps, character skin packs or other game-related experiences are not permitted to sell these to other players.

Only officially licensed Minecraft content can be sold that way However, that hasn't stopped some people making money from the game.

James Delaney is the founder of Blockworks, an organization made up of Minecraft creators. He's been able to build a successful business despite all of the restrictions.

He is delighted to welcome the Marketplace.

"Hopefully it's the start of regular and steady income," he tells Newsbeat.

"In the past, we've relied on commissions that come in, and you're never quite certain of when that happens."

He is responsible for 62 creators who work in 20 countries.

Their primary source of income come from creating Minecraft-based content for marketing and educational campaigns.

James "got very interested in" building Minecraft maps with his online friends and realised a few years later that there was a way to earn money.

He says, "At least now we know there is an audience for our content."

"If it succeeds it will mean that we can continue to work on a more consistent and stable basis."

"Also, it's content that we can decide to create instead of being asked to make it, so we have creative control over it."

The marketplace will be available on both the Pocket and Windows 10 versions of the game.

This means that the majority of the estimated 120 million users of Minecraft worldwide will have access to it, although people who play on consoles won't.

John Thornton states, "Our goal is to work towards connecting creators and players."

"On Pocket edition it can be difficult to get content onto devices, so it's difficult for creators to display content they want to share with the world.

"By connecting creators to the marketplace , it'll make it easier for users to discover something they want to play with, buy it and download it onto their devices."

The players will continue to be able to build community experiences outside the market, and players will be having access to them for free.

Producers hope that consumers will spend more money for content that is more easy to find.

John says, "If you want people to share content right now, you should put it somewhere online and tell them where it is."

"You can make use of existing social media to do that, but it's way more effective to bring that into the game itself.

"Players in the context of playing the game they love, can just find the things they'd like to interact with."

He hopes that the game will enable people like James to have thriving businesses thanks to the game.

The Minecraft team is launching the new service that features nine creators from around the world.

The central Minecraft team will be monitoring adventure maps, skin packs, and experiences to ensure they are appropriate for the game's audience.
