Raspberry Pi Releases an OS to Bring new Life to Old PCs

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has released an experimental version of its Linux-based Pixel OS for Windows and Mac PCs. The OS was initially designed to run only on the Raspberry Pi hobby board, comes with the Chromium web browser and a suite of coding and productivity tools. Every Little Helps "We asked ourselves a simple question: If we enjoy Pixel so much, then why would we ask people to buy Raspberry Pi hardware in order to run it?" Eben Upton, founder of Pixel, wrote in a blog.

Built on top of Debian The OS is lightweight enough to run on old machines, provided that you have at least 512MB of RAM. Upton confirmed that the OS runs on the old i386 architecture version. It should run on older machines such as my ThinkPad X40 (above).

It's simple to test It's easy to test, but Upton urges you back to your devices that might contain valuable data. After downloading the image then burn it to an DVD or USB stick and then enable booting. This is usually done by changing the BIOS settings of your computer or pressing the "C" key when you open the Mac.

It will then start the OS without the need to install anything. You can boot from a USB stick to get the option of running "with persistence." This means that any changes or files made will be saved for the next session. You can choose to run the program without persistence or to reset it. As stated, you have a complete set of applications and a web browser, but unlike with the Pi version, there's no Minecraft or Wolfram Mathematica because of licensing issues.

There are a variety of lightweight Linux distros that work with older computers (including Debian), or you can install Neverware that turns your laptop into an Android tablet. However, the Pi Foundation supplies a lot of useful Linux apps with Pixel, and aims to make it as simple to use as is possible. Upton believes that by porting it to desktop computers, "we can see where [the operating systems] weaknesses are and fix them [on the Pito improve them..

It could be used to teach programming and other programs in schools, where the Raspberry Pi is already well-established. Students could learn in school, and then use the persistent boot option to go back to home using exactly the same configuration.

As mentioned previously, the Pixel OS is still in the early stages of development and isn't running on all computers. On his modern Mac, Upton said, "the machine doesn't recognize the image as bootable." They'll release more updates in the future however If you're interested in trying it out you can click the announce post to find it.
