Native Minecraft Servers with GraalVM Native Image

The Minecraft server is known to consume a lot of memory and CPU resources and is difficult to install. This project makes it possible to compile the Minecraft server into a self-contained native executable using GraalVM Native Image. It is expected to utilize less CPU and memory resources, be quicker to start, and simpler to deploy.

A native Minecraft server is less than 120MB in size and is significantly smaller than Minecraft's server.jar along with a JDK required to run it. With upx compression the size of the native executable may be reduced even further to less than 40MB which is smaller than just the server.jar. Initial tests suggest that run-time performance is competitive with less memory footprint. Build using GraalVM Enterprise native image for the best results. This provides greater performance and less usage of memory than the Community Edition. Also, try the G1 GC or Profile-Guided Optimizations. The Oracle Cloud Free Tier not only provides four Ampere A1 cores and 24 GB of RAM always free, which is plenty to host the Minecraft server as well as access to GraalVM Enterprise.

For more details, read this blog post.

Disclaimer This project is designed for demonstration purposes only and intended to help the Minecraft community evaluate the use of GraalVM Native Image. Use at your own risk

1. Download GraalVM Community or Enterprise (GraalVM 22.2.0 or later is required). Optional: make sure that upx is installed on your $PATH in order to enable compression. 2. Go to the repository and download it. Then, run build.sh. 3. Launch the native Minecraft server with ./native-minecraft-server. When you first run the server, you will have to follow the regular procedure of accepting Minecraft's EULA.

How it works

This project is only the build.sh script and the reachability metadata for creating an native Minecraft server. The build.sh script downloads Minecraft's server.jar and then extracts jars as well as other resources from it. After that, it launches GraalVM Native Image with the right configuration to create an original version of the Minecraft server. In the end, if upx is found on $PATH the script will compress native executable.

Limitations and Known Issues

- The configuration currently only supports Minecraft 1.18.2. - The server GUI is not yet supported. Mods are not supported currently. - There is no build script for Windows yet, but the WSL should work. Sometimes the native executable is unable to start. It is typically possible to restart it multiple times. Error: com.mojang.datafixers.types.templates.List$ListType cannot be cast to java.lang.Comparable.
