Tate Gallery Teams up With Minecraft

Tate Gallery teams up with Minecraft By Dougal Shaw Technology reporter

21 November 2014

The Tate Gallery will exhibit some of its most famous artworks in 3D within the virtual world of Minecraft. What is the best method of absorbing art?

Have you ever thought about stepping into an art piece and doing some exploring?

The Tate is inviting people to take a stroll around its art and take a good look.

There will be no security guards on watch.

It has joined forces with the creators of Minecraft - an online computer game where millions of players meticulously create fantasy worlds, block by block - to create 3D versions of two of its artworks in a brand new virtual gallery.

The first painting to undergo this digital, 3D transformation was Andre Derain’s 1906 painting The Pool of London and Christopher Nevinson's depiction of New York City, Soul of the Soulless City (1920).

Jane Burton, Tate Media's Creative Director Jane Burton, Tate Media's Creative Director, explains that visitors will be able to see a white cube that is a representation of the Tate Gallery.

"You walk through the door with the painting in front of you.

"What you can now do is take a walk towards the painting and then dive into it. This is where the adventure starts."

Visitors will have the chance to interact with the world of the painting.

To get a glimpse of Nevinson's cityscape from the train, you can ride it. Stop for a bite to eat with the builders while they rest from building skyscrapers.

Visitors should be wary of pirates on the Thames when visiting Derain's photo. They can also experiment with explosive paint pigments.

"You will be able to explore the activities and challenges that relate to the themes of the art.

Jane Burton, whose children introduced her to the power and potential of Minecraft Jane Burton, who is the creator of Minecraft, says, "It's art history adventure,"

Adam Clarke, a well-known Minecraft creator, first suggested that Minecraft exhibits be created.

He came up with the idea for Tate's IK Prize. This prize is given to an idea that makes use of digital technology to encourage people in the arts.

When the idea eventually came to fruition, Tate enlisted the skills of other famous Minecraft builders such as Dragnoz, Kupo, Featherblade and Tewkesape to build the worlds that were influenced by the famous photos.

However there are those who aren't convinced.

Perspective

These Minecraft creations will provide younger audiences a greater appreciation of art works so that they can see original works in galleries. Rachel Campbell-Johnston, Times art critic, says it will feel like "seeing an old friend".

That feeling of recognition, "like seeing a celebrity" is a powerful tool to help appreciate art and also to encourage viewers.

"But ironically the Minecraft games themselves provide an experience that is more pleasant," she continues.

"It is more of an entertainment than a meaningful connection to the painting, as 3D mapping from [Minecrafts] replaces the real painting's illusionistic surface, doing the work for me."

Digital opening

The two works of Derain and Nevinson will be downloadable from Monday.

Players have to pay to join the Minecraft community, however the maps that are available for download of Tate's pictures are free.

With six more 3D masterpieces in the pipeline viewers will be keeping an eye to see how big the queues will be on Monday, when Tate's Minecraft exhibition opens its digital doors.
