Ahead of a new school year that could see students not step foot in a physical classroom, Microsoft is bringing Minecraft: Education Edition to Chromebooks.
Chrome OS Minecraft: Education Edition will allow cross-platform play with Windows, iPad, and Mac versions. Students will be able to socialize and collaborate on projects regardless of their device. Microsoft is also updating the program to add 11 new STEM lessons and an interactive Minecraft world to teach students about bees and pollination. An improved lesson plan library and the ability to track learning abilities are also part of the update too.
The company claims that Chrome OS, iPad and Windows devices will download the update automatically. However, Mac users will need to download the update manually. Schools that have Minecraft: Education Edition installed in their classrooms will not have to alter their subscription. The company will include the Chrome OS version of Microsoft 365 Education A3 and A5 licenses.

Minecraft: Education Edition is available since. It's not unusual that it's only been made available to Chromebooks this year. Google's computing platform is the most popular one in education. According to the company there were more than 30 million Chromebooks being used by schools across the world as of the year 2019. In 2018, Chromebooks represented 60 percent of all laptops and tablets used in classrooms for K-12 students in the US. The other thing that's fascinating about this new release is that it gives Chrome OS users an official way to install Minecraft without sideloading the game onto their device.
