Now We're Good to Go!

Clara and I run Minecraft on our home FreeBSD server in a jail which keeps Java and other dependencies in a single location. Although I haven't yet tested it, the theory is that you can run the server in any location that Java supports, which includes Linux, NetBSD and possibly other operating systems.

So, I could not let it go! The good news is that you can run a Minecraft server on another favorite OS. This post explains how I did it but I'm sure there are other options.

Getting Java installed

After you have installed NetBSD and configured networks and enabled pkgin. You will require an OpenJDK in order to run Minecraft.

OpenJDK 17 is required for Minecraft 1.17 and later. OpenJDK 16 however, is the most recent version as of July 20,22. To confirm, you can search:

If you're 16 you can still pull the latest packages by opening the repo file.

Change the repo URI, in my case from 9.0 to 9.0_current:

Thank you so much to Ryoon@ for his work on this. He is a huge advocate for NetBSD I feel like I owe him a cup of coffee or a glass of beer each time I travel to Japan.

We can now install, along with a few other useful tools.

Running Minecraft

From here the way to run Minecraft is basically the same as running any Java-enabled server. I have all my files in one place:

Log into my local account and begin:

We're now ready to begin!

Java throws an error about a system not supported, which NetBSD users are aware of. It is safe to ignore, based on my testing.
sometimes

After you've run the server first time, don't forget to accept the EULA.

Create a launch script

I like to create a symlink to minecraft.jar the most recent version of the server

Then reference it in launch.sh using tmux to keep the server after disconnecting. I also prefer to give Minecraft more memory:

We're now ready for the adventure!

Follow-up

Next, I'd like to build a Chroot environment that is compatible with Java and Minecraft. This is similar to the FreeBSD jails. I've had a solid NetBSD exploration of chroots that I've been working on for a while; I'll tidy up and make it available soon.
