Microsoft is expanding its world of Minecraft into a new action adventure game, Minecraft Legends. The title, which is due to launch in 2023, requires players to explore the Minecraft world while it's being invaded by an evil force.
Microsoft's Mojang studios, which makes Minecraft describes the new game as a "familiar yet in-many-ways-new" experience, focused more on battle and strategy. The original Minecraft game was released in the year 2011. It lets players create and explore while fighting zombie-like creatures.
"You are at the center of every battle you fight, fighting alongside your allies while giving them directions," Microsoft said, in an announcement teasing the game. Microsoft announced that it had collaborated with Blackbird Interactive who also developed the space strategy game Homeworld3.
Just because Minecraft Legends comes from a popular title doesn't guarantee success however. Minecraft is, in itself, one of the most played video games ever made and is right up there with Tetris, Super Mario Bros. and Grand Theft Auto. However, its attempts to expand beyond the popular formula have been inconsistent.
Minecraft Dungeons, an action-adventure game based on Minecraft's style, received mixed reviews when it was released two years ago, as per a survey by Metacritic. GameSpot, another CNET corporate cousin also gave Minecraft Dungeons a "good" rating. GameSpot noted that Minecraft Dungeons was focused on fighting monsters rather than offering a new twist to its formula of creating worlds. Szv7 "Rather than shift our expectations of what games can be, it's relying on its popularity," GameSpot's Steve Watts wrote.
Microsoft announced Minecraft Legends at its annual summer video game showcase, which will be held online this year. The game will be released for Xbox, PC, and cloud gaming next year.
