As you may have seen in our latest update, NetEase has confirmed that they will take control of World of Warcraft China in June. Their new home base is located at wow.163.com. We had originally stated that The9 would be handing over their hardware, software and staff to operate the game. However it's not the case. According to IDG News Service, NetEase will set their own network servers to play the game. It's a massive task, so it's likely to be challenging for the first few days. However, Blizzard is confident that NetEase will be able to handle the transition after having played some games in the market. It also means that some of the supercomputers that we've reported previously that are owned by The9 will go to... well we're not sure exactly what.
There are plenty of reasons to use them for -- despite their stock plummeting due to the WoW license being revoked, The9 also runs a number of other games there, including Guild Wars, Ragnarok Online and a handful of other popular Eastern MMOs (not to mention that EA holds a substantial stake in them). There must be a market for supercomputers with other companies and educational institutions. It's unlikely that all that hardware will be buried in the sands of time.
But , more importantly, it'll be interesting to see how NetEase manages the transitionWe've had a few inventory issues and other issues here on the Western side of the world However, we've never had any major loss of character information (cue all the Blizzard engineers pounding on the wood). Datchley is blogging We're sure there are countless backups in place however should something go wrong in the transition between hosts, it could be devastating for the WoW gamers in China.
