Craftbukkit is an external third-party Minecraft mod which allows you to use Minecraft plugins. The mod is available on Bukkit.org and works as an JAR file which runs the Minecraft server JAR.
After downloading the latest version of Craftbukkit change the name of the downloaded file to craftbukkit.jar. Gaming You can download the development version or the recommended build. The recommended builds are more stable but they're often older versions of Minecraft which users with updated clients can't connect to. You won't want to use the development build unless the recommended version has been updated to the most recent Minecraft version.
Copy the craftbukkit.jar file to the same directory that contains your minecraft_server.jar. This article assumes that you already have a functioning Minecraft Server. If not, please read my article on creating your own Minecraft Server.
You can start your Minecraft server in the same way as you normally do but replace minecraft_server.jar by craftbukkit.jar. Craftbukkit is a program that requires more memory, might require you to increase the RAM available to your server. Craftbukkit will initialize itself and create a configuration file called bukkit.yml. This file is not required to be modified and is a basic.
The next step is to install plugins. Plugins are available on Bukkit.org website under plugins.bukkit.org. There you can browse plugins according to category, and even search for plugins using keywords. Plugins which haven't been updated recently likely won't work with the latest version of Craftbukkit/Minecraft. You can download the plugin by visiting a page.
Installing and downloading a plugin is fairly easy. If you get an JAR file, just put that file in the "plugins" folder automatically created by Craftbukkit. This modification will only be effective if the server is restarted. The plugin also creates an additional folder with the same name as the JAR file, which contains configuration files and other resources required to use the plugin.
If your download is a rar or zip file, you need to unzip or unrar this file using a program which can handle these extensions. The files must be transferred to your plugin folder. Make sure that the JAR file is located in the root folder of the plugins folder. Restart your server and the new plugin will be activated.
