Students Encouraged to Dream at Young Leaders Day

Live a 3D lifestyle. This is the challenge that inspiring New Zealand leaders set for the more than 2,000 students attending the National Young Leaders Day (NYLD) held at the Vodafone Events Centre, Manukau earlier in the day.

Students heard from Silver Fern and Northern Mystics player Laura Langman, athlete and Carabiner Mentoring Programme founder Cam Calkoen Adventurer and presenter of TV One's First Crossings series Jamie Fitzgerald the chief executive of The Mind Lab Frances Valintine, and Attitude Programmes for Schools presenter Charlie Laumatia.

NYLD events this year push students to live a 3D life by dreaming, daring , and building their leadership capabilities.

"Just like when a 3D movie bursts off the screen it is the same with the experience of a 3D life is better than a dull flat one," NYLD manager Annette Fale says.

"Dream what your ideal life might be... then follow that dream. Dare to do the brave and terrifying things that make life interesting. Your strengths are your greatest assets. There's so much more to you than you realize. No one gets a brilliant life without courage, vision and hard work." students were told.

Frances Valintine was a driving factor behind Media Design School. She founded The Mind Lab in Newmarket in 2013. It is a place that offers robotics as well as filmmaking, electronics programming, and science technology to children ranging from 4-15 years.

Frances called on the leaders of tomorrow to be ready to face a changing world.

"To prepare for the future, you have to open your mind to be curious. It is your strongest asset not technology, and not the way you play Minecraft, but curiosity and exploration," Frances said, as the students took notes in their notebooks.

"Wake up every morning and think about how I can improve my life.

The day was not just inspirational, but also fun. Highlights of the day included performances by the Laughing Samoans, interactive gaming and 3D video clips.

Since 2001, over 90,000 New Zealand students have attended the National Young Leaders Day. The events are held every year in Auckland, Wellington and Palmerston North, Rotorua. Christchurch and Dunedin.
