Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an uncomplicated game that is included) has a big new version that comes with Minetest 5.4.0 and it's worth trying again.
As we've mentioned during the Release Candidate stage of the release, this release makes it much easier to momod small mod packs as well as whole games. Minetest offered a way to browse and download all of them directly within the game for some time but now it can also download all the dependencies mods require, making it much simpler to download what you want , and then into the game. No more downloading one mod, and then searching for every single piece of information it needs.
A few improvements were also made to the built-in game "Minetest Game". While it's pretty basic by itself, it does serve as a nice base to showcase the engine and for extending with mods. With Minetest 5.4.0 it now includes crafting guides, 5 more wood variations, sound effects for lava and active furnaces, new translations , and multiple bugs fixed. It continues to build up slowly and gradually to become a lot more out of the box.
Other features include the ability to change the cross-hair when you point at objects, freely binding mouse buttons and name tags for players now have semi-transparent backgrounds, a caverns feature to generate flat maps, and the 'place' and 'fig keys are easily set up. There are numerous fixes to bugs, such as the inability of players to gain access to the inventories of others.

It's amazing to witness this open source, free game engine and game running extremely well. Going by the official server list, it appears like a large number of people regularly play various games with Minetest with hundreds online as of the time this article is published. Wow!
