Minecraft And NFTs

Recently, we've received feedback from members of the community inquiring for clarification and more transparency regarding Mojang Studios and Minecraft's position on NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and blockchain.

As we are in the process of updating our Minecraft Usage Guidelines to offer more specific guidance on the new technologies, we would like to take the chance to let you know that integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are not something we would accept or support. Let's take a closer look.

WHAT IS AN NFT?

An NFT is an exclusive, non-editable digital token that is part of a cryptocurrency and often purchased with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. An NFT can be linked with any digital asset such as an MPEG or GIF. However, digital art such as JPEGs are the most common application for this token. The purchase of an NFT gives you the certificate that states the ownership of the original digital file. However, as with any digital file, that file can be moved, copied, or even deleted. NFTs and blockchain have also been associated with speculation, where prices rise rapidly and, as we've seen, could fall quickly.

How will this affect me?

We strongly suggest that you read the following information if you are a player or creator involved in the trading buying or selling of NFTs that utilize Minecraft (like skins and worlds). Otherwise, it's likely that these changes won't impact you.

OUR POLICY ON NFTs and MINECRAFT

Our Minecraft Usage Guidelines outline how a server owner may charge for access and how everyone should have access to the same capabilities. These rules are in place to ensure that Minecraft remains a community in which everyone has access to the same content. NFTs may, however, create scarcity and exclusion models that are not in accordance with our guidelines and the purpose and spirit of Minecraft.

To ensure that Minecraft players have an enjoyable and safe experience, blockchain technology is not permitted to be used within our server and client applications. Neither can Minecraft in-game content , such as skins, worlds persona items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset. These are the reasons we have.

Certain companies have recently launched NFT implementations that integrate with Minecraft world files and skin packs. Other examples of how NFTs and blockchain could be used in conjunction with Minecraft include creating Minecraft collectible NFTs that allow players to earn NFTs through activities performed on servers, or by earning Minecraft NFT rewards for activities that are not part of the game.
Minecraft Servers

Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies results in digital ownership built on scarcity and exclusion which is not in line with Minecraft values of inclusion and creativity and playing with others. NFTs are not inclusive of our community and create a semblance of the haves and the have-nots. NFTs encourage speculation and profiteering, which we believe is incompatible with long-term happiness and prosperity for our players.

We are also concerned that certain third-party NFTs aren't reliable and could end up costing the players who buy them. Certain third-party NFT implementations are also dependent on blockchain technology and could require an asset manager who might disappear without notice. There have also been instances when NFTs were sold at fraudulent or artificially inflated prices. We are aware that the creation process within our game is intrinsically valuable and we aim to create a market in which those values can be recognized.

To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy a safe, inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications. It is also not used to create NFTs with any game-related content, including skins and worlds, persona items, or other mods. We will also be monitoring how blockchain technology develops over time to ensure that the above principles aren't violated and to determine if it will provide more secure experiences or other useful, inclusive applications in gaming. However, we do not have plans to integrate blockchain technology into Minecraft right now.

We hope to share more with you shortly. In the meantime, if you're interested in reading more on our guidelines you can find them here. Keep an eye out!
