Apache - Marcus Povey

So I've been using myCloud for a while now as a convenient method to share specific files across my devices. I've also learned How to Make a Minecraft Server and it's been quite enjoyable. The server is a PHP application, so it's quite simple to set it up.

To run the most recent Known code, I updated my server to PHP 7.3. PHP 7.3 is the most recent stable code that can be used by everyone.

This presented a bit of an issue, since ownCloud could only be used on PHP version up to and including 7.2! While PHP 7.3 will be supported in the coming version of ownCloud the release schedules are slow and I had to get my syncing on the right track.

It is possible to make use of PHP 7.2 on the ownCloud server and PHP 7.3 on all other applications.

Installing PHP-FPM

If you're running the old-fashioned mod_php apache module first thing you need to do is install PHP-FPM.

This is the most current method of running PHP, and I was planning on doing it anyway. It's quicker, provides more options for performance, and, crucially, for me, decouples Apache and PHP to allow you to run multiple versions.

This is possible on servers running Debian (mine is Debian with a third party PHP.7.3 apt repository). It's incredibly simple:

You'll also need to install all the PHP modules (pdo and gd) However, it's entirely up to you.

Then, you'll need to switch over your config:

Two points to be noted here. First, replace the a2dismod statement with whatever php version you are currently running. Secondly, you'll notice I didn't activate the PHP 7.2 FPM configuration. This is due to the fact that PHP 7.3 should be the default site, however PHP 7.2 can be enabled on certain virtual hosts.

Checking phpinfo() should show you something similar to this:

Note the PHP version and the Server API.

You'll notice PHP 7.3 FPM servers running when you check your server processes.

Configuring ownCloud's VirtualHost to make use of PHP 7.2

So, now you have to modify your ownCloud VirtualHost to make use of the PHP 7.2 speedy CGI server.

Again, this is really really easy, and is pretty much a cut and paste from the php7.2-fpm.conf file you'll find in your /etc/apache2/conf-available directory.

The following should be included in your ownCloud definition of virtual host

Now when you run PHPinfo() on your ownCloud domain, you'll find it running PHP 7.2!

Now I'm able to get back to synchronizing my files while running the latest PHP version for other domains.

This is a useful feature that can be used to accomplish more than slow software updates. This method will allow me to run a cutting-edge PHP version, such as PHP 7.4 against my development version, Known, and keep my blog running the stable version.

I thought it was cool. Minecraft Servers I hope you'll enjoy it as well!
