It shouldn't come as a surprise that kids are spending more time on their devices during the COVID-19 pandemic. How can you be sure they're balancing remote learning, social media, and Fortnite? Well, that's the point where Microsoft's new Family Safety app comes in. The free software, announced in March, is now out of preview and is available to anyone with an iOS or Android device to download.
The app allows you to set time limits for specific Android, Windows and Xbox applications, including video games like Minecraft. If your child asks for an extension you have the option of extending their time limit by 15 or 30 minutes, and one two or three hours. Skin night The Family Safety app can also be configured to send an email whenever they want to buy something through the Microsoft Store, and set up various search and web filters within the (now Chromium-based) Edge browser.
The app can be set to send out an email each week with an activity report that breaks down your child's screen time by app and device. The idea is to notify you that there's a problem and to have a chat with your child. The app also has tracking of your location that allows you to know exactly the place your family members are in real life. In the future, Microsoft 365 Family subscribers will also get alerts when a family member is in or leaves a specific area. The premium plan will also offer some kind of 'drive safety habit tracking feature, too, starting in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK.
None of these tools are particularly innovative, and they're not worth the effort if your family is spending most of their free time on Macs, iPhones and iPads. If every member is a participant in the Microsoft ecosystem, though this could be a decent dashboard - or a first port of call, at the very least, for ensuring they're living a healthy lifestyle both on the internet and in the real world.
