Minecraft XBLA made Money within an Hour, and it Broke Digital Sale Records

Minecraft is digging its own grave with its latest release on XBLA -- and by "grave" we mean "lavish, gold-plated throne room with indoor pool and grape-feeding robots." Minecraft was profitable within an hour of its debut on XBLA the developer Markus "Notch" Persson tweeted today. That's on top of Notch's multi-million-dollar PC version.

Notch stated that Minecraft sold more than 400,000 copies in 24 hours, based on the number of people who participated in leaderboards. According to Microsoft, Minecraft sold more digital copies than any other XBLA title within its first day of release and set records for digital sales.



Notch tweeted earlier today that he had Minecraft sales numbers (turns out that they were the above leaderboard figures). This led to discussions about the inner workings XBLA developer contracts and Fez's Polytron. Polytron isn't yet aware of Fez's exact sales figures despite the fact that the report was released just one month ago.



According to Polytron, "Standard procedure" means that you find out the amount you earned when the first check arrives three to four months later. Notch believed that getting instant numbers was the standard, but he avoided contract negotiations and isn't sure what it says about the subject.



Minecraft also gets free updates, "which is something every other developer on the platform is told is not an option," Polytron wrote. Notch replied: "We had to fight for that, and we got only a small amount of them. I'm not sure why they don’t like it."



We may have found the secret talent of Notch and the key to his success: fighting the contract, not negotiating, and winning.

Microsoft today announced that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition Mojang's console version the immensely loved PC game, has broken all previous records for digital sales. It was the most popular game sold by any other game in the first 24 hours of its release on Xbox LIVE Arcade.



This is following the footsteps of Trials Evolution, who also broke records for revenue in its first day of sales for its first game of the "Arcade Next" program.



Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was created by 4J Studios in conjunction with Mojang and Microsoft Studios, and introduces new gameplay experiences , such as a unique crafting menu as well as game tutorials and split-screen multiplayer, as well as online multiplayer that can accommodate up to eight players over Xbox LIVE.



Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is available for purchase on Xbox LIVE Arcade at 1600 Microsoft Points. It is the final game of the "Microsoft Studios Presents Arcade NEXT” lineup that also includes Trials Evolution (Redlynx), Bloodforge(Climax), and Fable Heroes, (Lionhead).
